At Lord's, September 2. Pakistan won by seven wickets (D/L method). Toss: Pakistan.
The kind of overcast conditions relished by many a county seamer in domestic Lord's finals made Pakistan's new-ball duo well-nigh unplayable. In a match that rain trimmed first to 46 overs a side and then to 40, Mohammad Asif and Shoaib Akhtar overpowered England's top order with combined figures of six for 38 from 16 overs. England desperately missed the dynamic options Andrew Flintoff could have offered. His stand-in, Strauss, was caught behind first ball, and at 78 for five there was no way back, though handy innings from the later order kept them going into the last over of their reduced allocation. The admirable Lewis, bowling with an accuracy beyond his colleagues, had both openers caught at the wicket, but Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf picked off the rest of the attack before Inzamam-ul-Haq came in to finish the job with 42 in 26 balls.
Man of the Match: Shoaib Akhtar.
