ENGLAND v ZIMBABWE

At Brisbane, January 7

15-Apr-1996
At Brisbane, January 7. England won by 26 runs. Toss: England.
England secured a hard-fought win - their first over Zimbabwe - to keep alive their hopes of reaching the finals. In high humidity, two days after the back-to-back Melbourne and Sydney Tests, several of England's batsmen seemed jaded, while Fairbrother, who had just arrived to replace White, was run out as he carelessly jogged a single. Thorpe stood firm to make 89, his highest one-day international score, in 119 balls, but he later required hospital treatment for dehydration and heat exhaustion. In Zimbabwe's reply, only Andy Flower and Whittall established themselves against disciplined out-cricket. The match added another name to England's ever-growing injury list: Udal damaged a rib muscle, an injury which eventually ended his tour.
Man of the Match: G. P. Thorpe.

Attendance: 10,035.
