South African opener Herschelle Gibbs has had an operation to reset a double fracture in his nose. He was struck in the face by a bouncer from Vasbert Drakes on the fourth day of the first Test against West Indies at Johannesburg.
The ball got through between the peak and the visor of Gibbs's helmet. He was rushed to hospital, where X-rays revealed a displaced fracture and an undisplaced one.
Gerald de Kock, the South African team's spokesman, explained: "The surgery was done by a leading ear, nose and throat surgeon and lasted 30 minutes. Gibbs will remain in Johannesburg until Friday, when the surgeon will do a post-operative evaluation of his nose."
Gibbs, 29, is aiming to be fit for the second Test of the four-match series, which starts at Durban on Boxing Day. South Africa won the first Test, at Jo'burg, by 189 runs.
