At Cuttack, January 22. England won by 16 runs. Toss: India.
England struck lucky with the freak dismissal of Tendulkar, run out backing up by a deflection
from the bowler, Hollioake, just when he seemed to be taking control. The ensuing confusion left
India reeling at 186 for eight and, despite a late rally by Agarkar and Kumble, they fell 16 short.
England had picked Vaughan again ahead of Thorpe, now recovered from a stomach bug, and
their faith was rewarded when he scored his first fifty in eight one-day internationals, manoeuvring
the ball skilfully into gaps. After one sharp single too many, Vaughan perished, the first of five
run-outs in the match; a noisy crowd made calling hazardous. But Collingwood set himself to bat
out the overs, and finished with a resourceful 71 from 78 balls. England's task would have been
easier had Trescothick not dropped both Tendulkar and Mongia in the slips. Three more chances
went down, but the ground fielding was exemplary and, once Tendulkar fell, the Indians struggled
to hit boundaries on a slowing pitch. When Gough dismissed Kumble, he became the first England
bowler, and the 29th worldwide, to take 150 one-day international wickets.
Man of the Match: P. D. Collingwood.
