†INDIA v WEST INDIES 1987-88

At Gwalior, January 22

15-Apr-1989
At Gwalior, January 22. West Indies won by 73 runs. India's inclusion of Hirwani, the leg-spinning hero of the fourth Test, made no impact on West Indies. Although they started moderately, losing four wickets in making 103 after Shastri put them in, their fortunes were sent soaring by a superb maiden one-day international hundred from Hooper, who batted with a quiet charm initially and then became so aggressive that he struck 58 of the last 67 runs off only 33 balls. He hit twelve fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 113, and with Logie added 108 for the fifth wicket. With Patterson striking thrice in a lively opening spell, India had no foundation on which to build a reply. They were spared humiliation by a handsome 52 from Kapil Dev and 73 scored in rather desperate fashion by Shastri.
Man of the Match: C. L. Hooper.
