ADELAIDE - South Australia has suffered a blow ahead of the Pura Cup cricket
match against New South Wales starting tomorrow with in-touch batsman Jeff
Vaughan ruled out through injury.
Vaughan hurt his right hand when the ball struck him on a fingertip as he
attempted a catch during SA's one-day win against Victoria last Sunday.
SA state manager of cricket Greg Chappell said Vaughan had been cleared of
any fractures but was in considerable pain.
"It's disappointing for him ... he's in good form and obviously was keen to
play," Chappell told AAP.
"He's got a lot of pain and swelling and not much movement."
The injury follows a promising opening to the season for Vaughan, who scored
an unbeaten 131 in SA's drawn four-day match against Western Australia last
month.
The right-handed number five batsman has also scored 55, 9 and 57 in one-day
fixtures so far this season.
The Redbacks were hopeful Vaughan would recover in time to play in the
Mercantile Mutual Cup match against the Blues on Sunday but he was today
also in doubt for that match.
Young allrounder Ryan Harris will join the Redbacks' side as 12th man for
the Pura Cup clash at Bankstown Oval.
NSW will field a full-strength side for the match, including Steve and Mark
Waugh, Glenn McGrath, Michael Slater, Brett Lee and Stuart MacGill.
"We're confident that if we can keep the same effort up that we've used so
far this season we can give them a good contest," Chappell said.
"This is a great challenge for us, this is the best side in domestic cricket
in Australia and probably the world. It's a good opportunity to test
ourselves out."
Team:
SA: Darren Lehmann (capt), Greg Blewett (vice-capt), Chris Davies, Shane
Deitz, David Fitzgerald, Jason Gillespie, Ben Johnson, Graham Manou, Brett
Swain, Paul Wilson, Bradley Young, Ryan Harris (likely 12th man).
