Injured Warne misses NZ trip, and other news
By Nelson Clare in Melbourne
SHANE WARNE yesterday withdrew from next week's short trip to
New Zealand to recover from a shoulder injury in time for
Australia's tour of India next month.
The leg-spinner made the announcement here the day after the
drawn third Test against South Africa in Adelaide, which gave
Australia a 1-0 series win. He said he expected he would only
need a week's treatment on the right shoulder joint. "Hopefully
it will be good news, hopefully nothing long-term, and I'm sure
it will be right for India," Warne said.
Looking back to Adelaide, an unnamed South African player who
apparently used a stump to batter the door of the umpires' room
after the conclusion of the Test has escaped punishment. While
no umpire was in the room at the time the damage was done, a
dent was left in the door.
Harvey Jolly, the South Australian Cricket Association
operations manager, said it was a minor incident with far worse
things happening in the past to the dressing-rooms at the
Adelaide Oval.
There were claims that one of the South Africans hit the door in
anger over the decision of the third umpire, Steve Davis, to
give Australia's match-saver, Mark Waugh, not out when he
dislodged the bails nine overs from the end of the match.
Meanwhile, Dave Richardson, South Africa's wicketkeeper, has
announced his retirement from international cricket. He said
that he will quit the game completely at the end of the domestic
season.
Richard Illingworth, Worcestershire's former England spinner,
received a county record sum of £271,275 from his benefit last
year.
Career-best bowling by Daniel Vettori and a fine all-round
performance by Chris Harris helped New Zealand to a comfortable
40-run win against Zimbabwe at Hamilton yesterday in the first
of five one-day internationals.
