Inquest into the death of David Bairstow
The coroner at the inquest into the death of former England wicket-keeper David Bairstow has returned an open verdict, describing the suicide of the 46 year old Yorkshire player as a "cry for help". Bairstow was found by his family, hanged at his home; police said at the time there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
It has since been revealed that Bairstow was facing a court appearance for a drink/driving offence. The inquiry heard that he feared being banned from driving for more than a year if he was convicted, he was also worried about the effect on his wife and family.
His wife speaking after the hearing, expressed astonishment that her husband had taken his life in the way he did.
