Sussex v Kent, Hove
Scorecard
James Kirtley tore through the Kent second innings as Sussex raced to a convincing 133-run victory at Hove. He finished with a majestic 6 for 26 from 15 overs - but the victory came at some cost for Sussex. In one Kirtley over, not only did two Kent batsmen leave the field, both caught, but two Sussex fielders also had to depart - one with a broken nose and eye damage, and the other with an injured thumb. Jason Lewry collided with Carl Hopkinson as he held on to a catch to dismiss Geraint Jones, and Lewry came off the worse with his nose being knocked out of place. And five balls later, Tony Cottey attempted to hold on to a ferocious pull from Ed Smith at square leg, but only succeeded in severely injuring his thumb. Both were whisked straight to hospital. Kent were missing their captain David Fulton, who also suffered a sickening blow to the eye - only this time from a bowling machine. They needed 293 for victory, and while Greg Blewett and Smith were there, victory was in their sights. But once Mushtaq Ahmed had Blewett caught for 37, Kirtley took centre stage and blasted away the last four wickets in quick succession.
Surrey v Warwickshire, The Oval
Scorecard
Only 29 overs were possible at The Oval as rain swept across the country, but there was still time for Adam Hollioake to get the 13 runs he needed for his 16th first-class hundred. Hollioake, whose recent form has pushed him ever closer to an England recall, finished on 122 after hitting 17 fours and two sixes in a typically buccaneering two-and-a-half hour innings. His old England colleague, Alec Stewart, scored 50 before he was caught by Nick Knight off Dougie Brown. The other wicket to fall in the day was Azhar Mahmood (25), as Surrey finished on 349 for 7, 64 behind Warwickshire's first-innings total.
