Madugalle and Wettimuny unavailable: Cricket Board runs into
troubled waters over nominees for selection committee
By SA'ADI THAWFEEQ
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board's choice of five persons to serve in
the selection committee has run into troubled waters.
The Cricket Board ExCo on Saturday named Roy Dias, Ranjan
Madugalle, Sidath Wettimuny, S. Skandakumar and Jayantha
Seneviratne to serve in the selection committee from April 1.
However, the names have still not been ratified by the Sports
Minister.
It is reliably learnt that Sports Minister S.B.Dissanayake had
summoned the hierarchy of the Cricket Board and taken them to
task over the manner in which they had got about naming the
selection committee. He had also told them to manage their
internal affairs properly and ensure that there is a smooth
functioning of the Board.
The final choice of who should serve in the selection panel
rests with the Sports Minister under whose aegis the selectors
come under. The Cricket Board is expected to put up the names
that have been proposed to the Minister.
Among the names that were proposed to serve in the selection
committee were Ajith Jayasekera, K.M. Nelson, Ranjit
Samarasekera, D.S. de Silva, Lalith Kaluperuma and Upali
Ahangama.
It is reliably learnt that the Minister may retain Duleep Mendis
and T.B. Kehelgamuwa, two members who served in the previous
selection committee. These two persons were replaced by
Skandakumar and Seneviratne by the Cricket Board's ExCo.
Meanwhile, it is reliably understood that Ranjan Madugalle and
Sidath Wettimuny have indicated their unavailability to serve in
the selection committee due to personal commitments.
