Former president Tony Marshall failed to win the backing of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) in a bid to be nominated to contest the vice-presidency of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
According to sources, Marshall had expressed an interest, but when nominations closed two weeks ago he was not the BCA's choice. Instead, former West Indies fast bowler, selector and manager, Rev. Wes Hall, is the candidate for the May 12 elections.
When contacted, Marshall said: "Let's focus on supporting Wes. It is not appropriate or in good taste to have distractions."
It was felt Marshall was not supported by the local organisation because at the last elections of the WICB two years ago, he was resoundingly beaten for the post of vice-president by Clarvis Joseph.
Another source dispelled rumours that the former BCA president was sidelined because he was not part of the late Sir Conrad Hunte's team that formed the nucleus of the present BCA executive, which has been headed by Stephen Alleyne since Sir Conrad's passing in December.
Hall was the only Barbadian to be nominated for any position by the BCA, which is backing the nomination of the president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board of Control, Alloy Lequay, for the WICB presidency.
Lequay will oppose incumbent Pat Rousseau, who is looking to be returned for the third consecutive time. Hall's opponents will be incumbent Joseph and president of the Guyana Cricket Board, Chetram Singh.
Elections for WICB posts take place at the Guyana Pegasus Hotel in two weeks.
