Mid West Rhinos win after batsmen penalised

A round-up of the Pro50 Championship matches on March 15, 2014

Mid West Rhinos might have got home against Mountaineers relatively comfortably, with four wickets and two overs to spare, but the talking point for them would have been the target they had to chase. After having bowled Mountaineers out for 198, they were chasing 199 for the majority of their innings. Then, with the score on 194, they were penalised for their batsmen having repeatedly run down the centre of the pitch; the target was revised to 204, with five penalty runs added. It mattered little to the end result, with none of Mountaineers' batsmen, barring opener Tino Mawoyo, having made much of an impact earlier. Run-outs didn't help the side either, as they folded in 46 overs. Rhinos' main contribution also came from their opener, Bothwell Chapungu, but a little more support from the middle order made all the difference for them.
Matabeleland Tuskers chased down 189 in 46 overs, with four wickets in hand, against Mashonaland Eagles, on the back of an unbeaten 90 from Brian Chari. Only one other batsman could get into the 30s in the reply, but with No. 3 Chari anchoring it, Tuskers were mostly on course. Chari was on track for a maiden List A century, but in the end Eagles' runs were not enough for him to get there. That was chiefly down to Tuskers' new-ball bowler Thabo Mboyi, who claimed a career-best five-for to stymie Eagles' top and middle order. Fifties from Nick Welch and Nathan Waller made sure they got into the vicinity of 200 but, not too surprisingly, it proved to be insufficient.
