Peter Moores, the newly appointed England coach, will seek the advice of Michael Vaughan before making any decision on the future of the team but said he'd prefer one captain for both forms of the game. Moores faced the media for the first time since his appointment on Friday, at the ECB Academy where he has formed his reputation as director.
Moores has just returned from holiday and wouldn't be drawn into the ideas he will bring to the England set-up but said he was looking forward to taking charge of the team. "It's fantastic. I have got a few decisions to make but it is a very exciting challenge. I look at it as a challenge. England have just got back [from the World Cup] and I have a chance to speak to them and find out what lessons have been learnt."
He confirmed that Vaughan will lead England in the first Test against West Indies, starting on May 17, but wants to discuss the one-day role with him before deciding which direction to take. "You will have to wait and see. I will talk to Michael first and see how he wants to go forward," said Moores. "Michael is going to be captain in the first Test and his reputation goes without saying. He will have some interesting views on what happened this winter. I am going to see what Michael's view is. In an ideal world it is nice to have one captain."
Moores' experience with the current England team is limited, although he did spend time with Vaughan while he was with the Academy side in Perth during the Ashes. "To watch him operate as a man was very impressive," he said. "I was very impressed and I'm looking forward to working with him."
It's been a tough winter and you learn a lot from tough times. We need to learn and move forward. The selectors need to sit down and talk about what happens
One of the major criticisms of Duncan Fletcher's reign was that England never gave enough time to one-day cricket, as suggested by early exits at the 2003 and 2007 tournaments. Moores insisted he will be paying equal attention to both forms of the game.
"They are both important and we will be working hard on both to make sure we are successful in both," he said. "We had a great time in the Commonwealth Bank Series [in Australia], the key is consistency. We will work with the players and try to build on that. It is a good challenge for me to try and improve."
Despite a poor year where England have managed just one Test series win alongside the CB Series Moores is positive about the future. "We have shown over last 12 months or so we have great players who can play great cricket - the trick is to get them playing great cricket again. I'm very positive because we have some good players.
