England face the first part of a two-part equation that could see them into the CricInfo Women's World Cup semi-finals in Christchurch.
First, they must beat New Zealand at the BIL Oval. And, after a fine batting performance against Sri Lanka at the same ground, they would give themselves a chance.
But based on recent performances, the New Zealanders are firm favourites, which means England will have to play above themselves to fulfil the first part of the equation to earn a semi-final place.
The second part is out of their hands. If they do roll New Zealand, they will then have to sit back and wait for the last day of the tournament on Saturday with their fate in the hands of the Irish.
If Ireland beat South Africa, who were humbled by Australia despite their best batting performance of the tournament, England would finish ahead of the South Africans, who surprised them so long ago in the early stages of the tournament.
Based on their highly creditable losing performance against India on Monday, Ireland would suggest the second part of the equation is a definite possibility. In their penultimate game of the tournament, Ireland play the Netherlands to avoid the bottom place on the table.
England have made one change to the side that beat Sri Lanka by 105 runs on Tuesday. West Midlands 20-year-old slow left-armer Dawn Holden comes in for 16-year-old Somerset off-spinner Laura Harper.
Skipper Clare Connor said: "Now this really is the crunch. We are showing
signs of improvement and our bowling and fielding are as good, if not better,
than anybody's. If we could make 40 or 50 more runs every time we could beat
anyone."
