NEW ZEALAND v INDIA

At Dunedin, March 12

15-Apr-1993
At Dunedin, March 12. New Zealand won by four wickets. Toss: India. New Zealand's sixth win effectively ended India's ambitions, and equalled West Indies' record run of six World Cup victories in 1983. Fearing rain, Azharuddin chose to bat. Srikkanth was caught on the long-on boundary off Patel's third ball and Jadeja pulled a hamstring, but then the captain and Tendulkar added 127 in 30 overs. When Patel returned, Azharuddin hit him for six and then, seeking another, pulled him into the hands of the diving Greatbatch. Tendulkar and Kapil took India towards a total of 230, which might have been defended, but not against Greatbatch. Hitting out powerfully, he struck 73 in 77 deliveries, and New Zealand were ahead of the required rate when he was caught on the square-leg boundary midway through the innings. Jones remained to ensure victory, though he lost four more partners, notably Crowe. The New Zealand captain was run out when More dashed to gully and knocked the ball back at stumps he could not even see.
Man of the Match: M. J. Greatbatch. Attendance: 9,134.
