With New Zealand scoring only 54 for the loss of Gedye, in the two hours in which cricket was possible on the first day this match, mainly dominated by the bowlers, remained undecided. Sinclair, Congdon and Reid gave New Zealand a sound start, but Asif and Arif caused the last five wickets to for 5 runs.
Pakistan broke down on the third morning, five wickets falling while 21 runs were added, but the tail came to the rescue. New Zealand led by 79 and consistently moderate scores enabled Reid to declare, leaving Pakistan to make 259 in just over three hours.
Motz and Collinge proved such a hostile combination that the first five wickets tumbled for 19. Finally, Asif and Intikhab played out the last thirty-five minutes and saved Pakistan from defeat.
