At Bristol, June 13. New Zealand won by five wickets. After being put in, Sri Lanka lost an early wicket to Hadlee, but during a fourth-wicket stand of 71 in twenty overs between Mendis and Madugalle they still looked capable of making a fair score. However, Hadlee returned to break the stand and later prevented any flourish by the tailenders. Turner and Wright made 89 for New Zealand's first wicket in only eighteen overs, and with a handsome innings by their captain, Howarth, New Zealand cruised home with more than twenty overs to spare.

Man of the Match: R. J. Hadlee.
