New Zealand v West Indies 2008-09

Wisden's review of New Zealand v West Indies, 4th ODI, 2008-09

Don Cameron
At Auckland, January 10, 2009. No result. Toss: West Indies. One-day international debuts: N. T. Broom, M. J. Guptill.
After Martin Guptill marked his international debut with a commanding, unbeaten 122 off 135 balls in front of his home crowd, Gayle launched a rapid response to a daunting total only for the weather to spoil the fun once again. A tall right-hander, Guptill opened only because Ryder had been dropped after missing practice and the team meeting the previous day following a night on the town. He hit eight fours and two sixes, and made the most of chances at 15, 21 and 33 to play with increasing confidence and fluency. He reached his hundred by launching Gayle for a huge six over long-on, and proceeded to the second-highest score by a player in his first oneday international. Guptill and Taylor put on 144 in 27 overs, then Neil Broom, also making his debut, rounded off the innings with two sixes from 17 balls. Rain initially stopped play with West Indies 47 from 8.4 overs, and Gayle already rampant. Play resumed with West Indies now chasing 235 from 40 overs, and Gayle started with two sixes and a four - but only 11 more balls were possible before the weather closed in for good.
