The first international at the Riverside produced the expected result with ten overs to spare, but Pakistan had a bumpy morning. By the 27th over, their fragile top order had crashed to 92 for five - and owed 45 to Extras, which finished on 59, equalling the one-day international record. The match aggregate of 96 extras beat the previous record of 90. In all, Scotland conceded 48 in wides and no-balls (which caused them to be docked one over).

The movement off a seaming pitch, kept under covers the previous day, bothered bowlers as well as batsmen. But Yousuf Youhana rebuilt Pakistan's confidence, adding 103 with Moin Khan. Wasim Akram thumped 37 off 19 balls and then started an even worse collapse in his opening over; at the other end, Shoaib Akhtar's pace was far too much for the Scots, who were soon 19 for five. Hamilton fought on and scored Scotland's first World Cup fifty, lofting three sixes over long-on and reducing the losing margin to double figures.
