PCB releases the Justice Bhandari Inquiry Report

Media Release: PCB on the Bhandari Report

The PCB on Saturday released the report by Mr. Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari of the Lahore High Court. The judicial inquiry was set up by the Pakistan Government last year on the instructions from the ICC to probe into allegations of match fixing against members of the Pakistan Cricket Team in the 1999 World Cup.
In its findings the commission has cleared the entire Pakistan team of any match-fixing charges during the 1999 World Cup matches against Bangladesh and India. As the findings of the Commission are in the negative on all the above points as per its terms of reference, "the Commission is not required to recommend appropriate punishment and measures", the report added in its findings.
A copy of the Commission of Inquiry report by Mr. Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari will also be submitted to the ICC, by Director PCB, during the forthcoming ICC Executive Board meeting in London.
The Commission of Inquiry was appointed by the Government of Pakistan through a notification on 25th August 2001, to look into the following matters and also make recommendations:-
  1. To probe and ascertain whether the match between Pakistan and Bangladesh (World cup 1999) was fixed.
  2. To probe and ascertain whether the match between Pakistan and India (World Cup 1999) was fixed.
  3. To determine whether some individuals were responsible for match fixing and betting.
  4. To recommend appropriate punishment and measures that in future this episode is not repeated in case of an affirmative finding.
  5. To inquire into the conduct of Umpire Javed Akhtar in the match between South Africa and England (during South Africa African tour to England in 1998).
The Commission in its reports found no credible evidence on all points in the above terms of reference, thus giving a clean bill of health to all individuals or team members.
A copy of the Mr. Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari report has also been released on the PCB official website simultaneously, and can be seen on www.pcb.cricinfo.com
