All-star of the match

Prior to this game, Rashid Khan had a Smart Economy rate of more than 8.50, but was also fourth in ESPNcricinfo's Dot Pressure Index, a new metric to reward bowlers for consecutive dot balls. On Tuesday, he conceded just 11 runs in four overs with his accurate wristspin, an economy rate of just 2.75. He also bowled 16 dot balls. Those figures played a major role in helping Sunrisers defend 118 at the chasing-friendly Wankhede Stadium.
It was another effective display of wristspin, using his variations - the googly and the flipper - to keep batsmen tentative. However, it was the legbreak that earned him both his wickets. First, Krunal Pandya was given out lbw on review after he missed a delivery that turned back in sharply to beat the inside edge. In his next over, the 14th of the innings, a flatter legbreak had Kieron Pollard caught at slip off a nervous prod. Rashid even bowled a maiden to Hardik Pandya in the 17th over of the innings to put the chase beyond Mumbai Indians.

The wow moment

Sunrisers had gained a stranglehold on their defence by the 17th over of the innings. Mumbai were tottering at 80 for 8, with 39 required to win off 24 balls. With Jasprit Bumrah at the other end, Hardik knew he had to retain strike. Rashid brought out his defensive style: flatter trajectory, taking the ball away from the batsman and not deviating from those plans.
All six deliveries were flat, disallowing Hardik the length to get underneath the ball. His best delivery, the final ball off the over, showed his game awareness. With the leg side open, Hardik needed a single to retain strike for the 18th over. But Rashid was quick through the air and spun the ball away. All Hardik could do was bunt the ball back.

The numbers

  • Rashid's final over, the 17th of the innings, was just the third maiden of the season.
  • Rashid has an economy rate of 11.33 with one wicket against left-handers this season. Against right-handers, he has an economy rate of 5.87, with five wickets.
  • Rashid's 2 for 11 helped Sunrisers complete the second-lowest successful defence in the IPL.

What they said

"I learnt a lot of things and had a good chat with the coaching staff - Moody, Murali, Laxman - and I just relaxed and enjoyed myself. And it brought me success. Murali told that whatever happens you have to be relaxed and be calm and do the basics right. This game is all about enjoyment."
