Review group to address flawed bowling actions at ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup

A three-man group of ICC-appointed experts will identify bowlers with flawed actions at the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh the ICC announced today.

The review group arrived in Bangladesh yesterday to identify and report to the ICC any bowlers with suspected illegal actions before they graduate to full international cricket.

It comprises former Pakistan paceman Waqar Younis, ICC High Performance Manager and former international player and coach Bob Woolmer and Bruce Elliott, an expert in biomechanical analysis at the University of Western Australia who has worked with a number international cricketers on their bowling actions.

The review group's aim is to identify and report on bowlers who need help with their actions.

ICC General Manager - Cricket David Richardson believes the presence of the three experts is an important step towards dealing with the problem of `throwing' in international cricket.

"The game's elite young cricketers are all in Bangladesh and it is expected many of them will gradate to full international cricket over the coming years," said Mr Richardson.

"By identifying any player who has a flaw in their technique now, there is the opportunity to address the problem before they graduate to senior international cricket."

The panel will be attending matches in Dhaka and Chittagong and will have the opportunity of viewing all participating teams.

The standard two-stage ICC Bowling Review Process that applies to full international cricket does not apply to U/19 events. Those reported by the panel will be referred to the relevant home Board for the necessary remedial action before the player may be considered for selection at full international level.

The review group supplements but does not override an umpire's authority under the Laws of Cricket to `call' a player for `throwing' on the field of play.

The review group is part of the ICC's comprehensive program to deal with bowlers with flawed actions.
