SOUTH AFRICA v AUSTRALIA 1993-94

At Johannesburg, February 19

15-Apr-1995
At Johannesburg, February 19. South Africa won by five runs. Toss: South Africa. International debut: E. O. Simons.
A capacity crowd of 30,000 watched De Villiers bowl one of the best-ever penultimate overs in a one-day international. It contained six successive yorkers which yielded one run and the wicket of Border. A home total of 232 for three was based on 112 from 120 balls from Cronje, his maiden century in limited-overs internationals. He had good support from Peter Kirsten and Rhodes, with whom he added 106 in just 14 overs.
McGrath was Australia's best bowler, but their more experienced players disappointed, both with ball and bat. The top six all reached double figures, but none went on to play a major innings and De Villiers's over upset all Australia's calculations: they finished five runs behind, even though they had five wickets in hand. Simons marked his debut with two for 29 in ten overs after conceding 12 in his first two; Donald's erratic form was worrying for South Africa.
Man of the Match: W. J. Cronje.
