Australian vice-captain Steve Waugh was given a reprimand, and a suspended fine equalling 30 per cent of his match fee, for challenging an umpire`s ruling in the Singer World Series match against India on Friday.
Waugh, man of the match for for his innings of 55, preceeded by his 1/20 off six overs and two blinding catches, one off his own bowling, challenged Sri Lankan umpire B.C.Cooray over his ruling on wide deliveries after being called.
After the match, which Australia won by three wickets, Cooray reported Waugh for being in violation of the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct.
Match referee John Reid, a former New Zealand skipper, conducted the enquiry and then announced the three-month suspended sentence for ``dissent and bringing the game into disrepute.``
