Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the West Indian vice-captain, has had his home flooded after torrential rains deluged Guyana, causing millions of dollars in damage. Chanderpaul is reported to have lost all the furniture and appliances on the lower level of his home, which was said to have been under four feet of water.
Unfortunately, because Georgetown lies below sea level, insurance companies do not offer coverage for floods. Ramnaresh Sarwan, also on the West Indies team currently in Australia, did not suffer any major damage. Neither did Imran Khan, liaison officer, and Reon King.
The worst flooding in a century has left several parts of Guyana under five and six feet of water. The country has had over 40 inches of rainfall in the first three weeks of the month, nearly six times the average. President Bharrat Jagdeo has estimated that about 400,000 citizens have been affected and has appealed for international relief.
