Preysal vs Clarke Road in Mt D'or final
By FORBES PERSAUD
A new champion will be crowned at the end of this year's Mt Do'r
Limited overs competition. As the semi final matches ended
yesterday , defending champions Caroni Wanderers, took their
exit when they were comprehensible beaten by Clarke Road United,
going under by 64 runs at Gilbert Park, California while Clico
Preysal , also advanced to the final when they made light work
of Santa Cruz Sports at Queen's Park Oval.
Wanderers, chasing the massive total of 232 for victory, found
the going very tough and were dismissed for 147 runs. Mainly
responsible for the demise of the champs were national off spin
bowler Mukesh Persad, who claimed three for 28; pacer Kennedy
Pollidore two for 28 and helped by some excellent fielding by
the Clarke Road team which resulted in three dismissals via the
run out route.
Former national players Roland Sampath, 38; Narine Bideshi 26
and Deonarine Deyal 25 put up some resistance, but they received
very little support from the rest of their batsmen as the
visitors forged ahead.
At the Oval, Clico Preysal cheered on by their scores of
supporters, demolished Santa Cruz by 46 runs. Having set Santa
Cruz 211 for victory, Preysal sounded an early warning when
Eugene Antoine removed Joseph Carimbocas ( 0) with just one run
on the board.
Seven runs later the Northerners suffered another setback when
West Indies pacer Ian Bishop had veteran Dexter Sweene two,
caught by wicket keeper Armanath Basdeo.
Skipper Lincoln Roberts then joined former national player Clint
Yorke and together the pair added 35 runs, with the latter going
after the bowling.
Yorke was extremely severe on Bishop. In one over he struck 15
runs, off the West Indies pacer, which included two glorious
fours and one sweetly timed pull over mid wicket for six - off
consecutive balls.
After this over skipper Antoine introduced former West Indies
Under 15 captain Devindra Krishna into the attack and in the
fourth ball of his first over, the left arm unorthodox spinner
struck.
Roberts going for a big hit went down the pitch and played
across the line and was adjudged lbw for four .
Yorke continued to take the attack to the bowlers, but just
after reaching the half century mark was brilliantly caught by
Bishop on the boundary off Kishore Lalchan. Yorke in his knock
of 53 struck eight fours and one six. After his departure,
wickets fell regularly and Santa Cruz could only get to 154 for
nine, when the overs ran out.
Veteran Frank Sorzano was the only other batsman to resist the
Preysal attack and was unbeaten on 35 at the close. Bishop was
the most successful bowler for Preysal with three for 41 while
Lalchan chipped in with two for 28.
Shazam Babwah and Randy Bachan for their century partnership on
the previous day shared the "Man of the Match" award.
