In the upcoming summer, Australia plays three-Test series against
both Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
This will give Mark Taylor the opportunity to assess the respective strengths of his opponents as these two teams are currently
playing each other in Pakistan.
After the first Test in Peshawar, when the home side soundly walloped Sri Lanka by an innings and 40 runs, it looks like Pakistan
are the biggest danger.
Their star performers are all well known to the Australian
players. Wasim Akram took five wickets in the first innings with
his fast, swinging deliveries being right on target and the perky
Aamir Sohail claimed four victims with his left-arm spinners as
Sri Lanka followed on.
The powerful Inzamam-Ul-Haq made 95 in Pakistan`s healthy total
of 459, while the new skipper, the resurrected Ramiz Raja, made a
confidence building 78.
Despite those performances, the best news for Pakistan was the
return of the other half of the deadly duo, Waqar Younis, who is
Akram`s partner in wicket-taking.
Younis played his first Test since injuring his back on the illfated tour of Zimbabwe last season.
It was not an overly successful return, with Waqar only claiming
one victim. Nevertheless, the series will give him the opportunity to build up to full fitness by the time he reaches Australia,
which is not a pleasent prospect for Mark Taylor and his fellow
batsmen.
