Warne - Waugh - Malik: How the affair unfolded
Electronic Telegraph
1995, February: Shane Warne, Mark Waugh and Tim May allege
Pakistan captain Salim Malik approached them with bribes to lose
matches during Australia's tour of Pakistan in 1994. Salim
rejects accusations as "shameful" but vice-captain Rashid Latif
and Basit Ali resign from the team.
March: Salim sacked as captain and suspended pending
investigation.
April: Warne, May and Waugh sign sworn statements which are
forwarded to International Cricket Council and Pakistan inquiry.
ACB rule that players will not go to Pakistan to appear before
inquiry.
October: Salim cleared by former Pakistan supreme court judge
Fakharuddin Ebrahim, who claims conflicting evidence from May and
Warne amounted to an "unbelievable story" and says Salim was
denied a democratic right to cross-examine by the Australians'
refusal to appear. ACB reject judge's findings while Salim flies
to Perth to join Pakistan team on tour.
November: Pakistan Cricket Board distance themselves from Mr
Justice Ebrahim's findings and reject a second investigation on
neutral territory. ICC announce no further inquiry into Salim
affair.
1998, September: Pakistan board find Salim, Wasim Akram and Ijaz
Ahmed guilty of match-fixing and recommend ban from Test cricket
until further inquiries are completed, and claim five other
Pakistan players should be examined. Findings of inquiry are
forwarded to Lahore for judicial inquiry. Pakistan then name most
of the players under suspicion for the Test series against
Australia.
October: Waugh and Mark Taylor give evidence in Lahore. Wasim
defends himself in court and team-mate Aamir Sohail claims to
have refused bribes.
December: ACB confirm they fined Waugh and Warne for accepting
money from Indian bookmaker.
