England v West Indies, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the first Twenty20 International, England v West Indies, 2013-14

15-Apr-2015
At Bridgetown, Barbados, March 9, 2014. West Indies won by 27 runs. Toss: West Indies.
At the venue where they had lifted the World Twenty20 four years earlier, England were on to a hiding from the moment Dwayne Smith pulled Broad's opening delivery over square leg for six, and quickly added three consecutive fours. Later, Samuels - on 43 - punished Tredwell's drop at cover from the first ball of a Dernbach over by hitting the remaining five to the fence. To make matters worse, Broad aggravated a knee problem, and missed the next two matches. England misread the Bridgetown pitch, believing spin would be vulnerable. In the event, Tredwell was their most likely weapon - he sent down 15 dot balls - and the West Indian slow bowlers managed six wickets between them. The skiddy leg-spinner Badree was especially effective, having Hales and the hapless Wright stumped from successive deliveries. From 73 for six, there was no way back for England. Bopara was later fined 25% of his match fee after a heated exchange with Samuels and Sammy, believed to have been about Samuels's bowling action. Sammy was docked 20% and Samuels 10%.
Man of the Match: M. N. Samuels.
