@john Melville... On that basis, in the unlikely event that a batsman made 480 and the team declared at 1/508, his amazing effort wouldn't make your list! The other guy who was 1 not out with 27 extras would get a fair ribbing though ...

I think you can make an argument that Braithwaite's shouldn't count, but not Bannerman's. In the case of Braithwaite one of the XI didn't bat at all, which obviously increases his chances of scoring a greater percentage of runs. In Bannerman's case he was the one who retired hurt. All 11 Aussies batted and had the sane opportunity to contribute to the score as any normal all out innings.

@John Melville: Bannerman shouldn't be in that list because HE retired hurt? Of course he should. He still made the runs, and if he'd been able to stay out there longer he would have made even more. It was the most important innings of all time. The last time I sang its praises here someone wrote in and said that it reflected the undeveloped state of the game at the time, so it's interesting that the next three instances have all come in the last 20 years.

    Virender Sehwag's 201

Virender sehwag played a very fast knock of 201 runs of just 231 balls against a tough balling attack of Sri lanka which had bowlers like Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan. None of the other batsman leaving Gambhir and Laxman managed to score even in double figures as we can see below. It was a one man innings.

I remember that Slater innings, he was run out by a yard halfway through but given not out. I'm still seething!

  •   John Melville on December 12, 2015, 11:12 GMT

in my opionon braithwaite and bannerman shouldnt be in that list as the team wasnt all out, bannermann retired hurt (not out) and with braithwaite last player was absent injured

  •   Duncan Holding on December 12, 2015, 10:51 GMT

The best of the lot was Dennis Amiss against the West Indies in 73-4 to save the game 262 not out out of 432-9.. 61% of the teams total with the next highest score being 38
