Yuvraj Singh ruled out of IPL

ESPNcricinfo staff
127

Yuvraj Singh, the India batsman, could be ruled out of cricket for as many as six months due to the ongoing treatment of his non-malignant lung tumour. This means he will at least miss the Asia Cup and the IPL, where he captained the Pune Warriors last year.

The last time Yuvraj played competitive cricket was the Tests against West Indies last November, and he was originally hoping to return as early as next month's ODI tri-series in Australia.

According to PTI, quoting an unnamed source from the IPL, Yuvraj is currently overseas. He has travelled to the United States in order to undergo "advanced treatment" for the tumour following which there will be a period of recuperation expected to take several months as well. This means he would not be available to play in the IPL, which starts on April 4. The unnamed IPL source said it could take up to "six months" for Yuvraj to return to cricket.

It has been a nightmare run for Yuvraj since his Man-of-the-Series performance in India's World Cup victory last year. An injury kept him out of the tour of the West Indies and his contribution to India's tour of England was cut short by a finger injury sustained during the Nottingham Test. He returned for the home Tests against West Indies, and was left out of the side for the third Test, in November.

Well said nachami - there is a lot of hate and bitterness out there. Banter is one thing - nastiness another.

Yuvraj has been the scourge of England (ask Broad) but no one likes to see this - especially someone so talented. I hope he makes a full recovery and we get to see him again soon on a cricket fieldGet well soon Yuvi.

@Yuvi - Being in IPL is far worse disease that anyone from India can ever have! There are no benefits and no cures for it except complete withdrawal. Think of this as blessing in disguise!! May God bless you aur aap jaldi se theek ho jao! Please publish

  • the_wallster on January 27, 2012, 20:59 GMT

Shame. But why is the headline: '"Yuvrah out of IPL", and not something associated with his health? His health is far more significant newsthan some pyjama-cricket jolly.

PEOPLE TALK HORRIBLE ABOUT CRICKET PLAYERS (OF COURSE FANS HAVE THE RIGHT - BUT THERE HAS TO BE LIMITATION BECUASE ALL INDIAN PLAYERS ARE COMMITTED TO THE GAME AND THEY ARE NOT THERE TO LOSE THE GAME!). LOOK AT THE HARSH REALITY OF LIFE.. NOTHING IS CERTAIN. I REALLY SYMPATHISE YUVARAJ.. HE HAS TO UNDERGO ALL THESE AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE.. I SINCERELY PRAY THAT YUVARAJ MUST COME OUT OF THIS AND BE HALE, HEALTHY AND LIVE LONG. WHAT IS THERE IN GAME? WHAT IS THERE IN MONEY? ALL OF US ARE CAPABLE OF EARNING TO LEAD A COMFORTABLE LIFE.. BUT WE HAVE TO HAVE TO LIFE! GOD BLESS HIM. GUYS - PLEASE DO NOT TALK ABOUT ANYBODY - ESPECIALLY ON THEIR PERSONAL LIFE OR TALKING ABOUT THEIR APPEARANCE.. IT IS VERY CHEAP.

The timeout and fight against the problem will make him a much stronger cricketer

  • sportofpain on January 26, 2012, 18:58 GMT

Yuvi - you are such an outstanding talent. Your clean hitting is unmatched by anyone I have watched in the last 30 years. You also have a wonderful temperament - a big match player. I still believe that you can contribute to the test team. The big 3 will leave soon and you are the perfect replacement having had 10 years of international experience and 3 test hundreds. This time though you will get a higher spot in the batting order - at No. 3 you can really set up the game for India. Viru, Gautam, you, Virat, Rohit, Raina/Pujara - what a line up of strokeplayers that is.

I hope you come back soon, stronger, fitter and better. I will pray that that happens.

  • IndianCricketFan001 on January 26, 2012, 18:46 GMT

You are always the big match player. India will miss your service for next six months so be it, but your health is more important and so do not rush to come back till you are 100% well. Anyway who cares for IPL / Asia cup.

Wishing Yuvraj Singh a speedy recovery..........yuvi...India Need you in future....

  • Percy_Fender on January 26, 2012, 8:02 GMT

We should all be grateful to Lillian Thomson for her invaluable observations. Cricket is only a game and we should all be more concerned about Yuvraj's health rather that speculate on when he might come back. We all should pray for this once promising young man. I hope that he wins in the battle before him right now.Indian cricket is not as important.

  • on January 26, 2012, 6:37 GMT

No wonders about the Pathetic and demoralizing games by the veterans !!!! Even after the dismal performance off late....BCCI seems to be ONLY intrested in the highest form of the "THE IPL" rather than ODI's or poor old test matches!!!!!!

  • RahulBhaskaranpinarayi on January 26, 2012, 6:37 GMT

hope you become good in soon. after he come back he will be great player like sachin and he will be next captan. Becuse he got loat of mental strength by fighting against the tumer. He will shine more in test.

  • on January 26, 2012, 6:37 GMT

wow hes the best odi batsman for india along with kohli i hope he gets better and people who make fun of him being sick i hope u get this

  • LillianThomson on January 26, 2012, 6:34 GMT

I'm a medical practitioner, and I have been extremely uncomfortable about the descriptions I keep seeing about Yuvraj's "non-cancerous lung tumour". Some media reports have for several months reported that his actual diagnosis is of a lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. If that's the case, the poor fellow might be in for a real battle. Cricket's only a game. Poor Yuvraj's health is far more important.

  • 30-30-150 on January 26, 2012, 6:23 GMT

Well then, Kohli's place at No.4 in the ODI team looks cemented. If Dhoni bats at 5, Raina/Rohit will play at 6. So its very hard for Yuvraj to make a comeback when he does return. Might be the end of yet another SINGH's international career.

Ind & IPL will surely miss his services a lot....... wish him a speedy recovery from the illness !!!!!!!

  • on January 26, 2012, 6:22 GMT

Get well soon Yuvraj! You did a lot for your country. May your good and valiant deeds protect you and keep you safe! Never expected to hear of a party going six hitting Yuvraj to be struggling from such a disease. Get well soon Yuvi. You know what? We need you.
