Malinga injury blow for Mumbai Indians

  shares 74

Back spasms have forced Lasith Malinga, the Mumbai Indians fast bowler, to return to Sri Lanka for treatment, and he could miss up to two weeks of the IPL as a result. Malinga last played for Mumbai Indians against Rajasthan Royals on April 11 and missed the match against Delhi Daredevils on April 16.

"He is undergoing treatment [in Sri Lanka]," Nishantha Ranatunga, the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. However, Ranatunga was not certain how long Malinga would be out and said the fast bowler would have to be evaluated by the Sri Lanka team's physio. It is understood that Malinga is planning to return by April 25 and targeting full fitness for the match against Delhi Daredevils on April 27.

Malinga has reportedly not been training since the game against Royals and flew back to Sri Lanka on the morning of April 16. The team spokesperson said that Malinga "required rest and it made sense to send him back home", but they were hopeful he would return in a few days.

The loss of Malinga weakens the attack of Mumbai Indians, who have made an inconsistent start to the tournament and currently sit in sixth place in the points table, having won three of their five games. Malinga is the leading wicket-taker in the IPL and has been in good form again this season, taking nine wickets from four games at an economy-rate of 4.54.

Injuries have been a problem for Malinga in recent years. A knee injury he picked up during Sri Lanka's Australia tour in 2007 threatened to cut short his career and in April, 2011, he retired from Tests in order to spare his knee further damage.

Its a big blow for MI... bcoz always MI batting is bit shaky.. even in champions league it was late order batting which helped them to win it with great bowling from Malinga (als good support was given by Harbajan n Patel)..

They should have taken in some stable batsman or two at the auction (sachin is the only dependable batsman we had in past but he is bit out of form now..) if we take teams like CSK n RCB they have a strong top order.. so at least in nxt IPL, get in a quality middle order batsman at the auction.... Anyway hope MI can win the IPL...

MI has to play Robin Pieterson as 4th foreign player , Johnosn in the place of Perera and drop Ojha.Else McKay must come in the place of RP. This will make MI a winning team w/o Malinga.

sachin is backbone of mumbai batting simmilarly malinga is backbone of bowling. munaf patel and harbajan are good for nothing. harbajan has turned out into disasterous bowler. he should quot captency. no one can take the place of sachin.as a captain. leaving out richard levi was bad decision.

Bye Bye Mumbai... Good while it lasted. BTW once MI realize how much they depended on Malinga, maybe they will name their team the Mumbai Malinga's ?

I really don't think MI can win any match without Malinga, example last 2 matches. Even with Sachin they can't win without Malinga. Malinga and Steyn both are match winners, but sadly steyn is in the wrong team. If Malinga and Steyn are in MI's, then without any problem they will be the champs. I think true cricketers like Sachin, Sangakar, Mahela and Ponting this T20 game will not suitable for them, because they are playing proper cricket strokes on the cricket manual. They should have avoided this T20 without disappointing the fans. PONTING DID THE RIGHT THING.

@chilled_avenger, malinga did play test but when he got injured playing test, the SLC cancelled his contract for 1 year(he played for country, when injured, SLC should have taken care), so he quit test. Morne Morkel and Mitchell Johnson n there r other good bowlers but malinga is the best. Malinga = pure tallent without anyone's support.

Malinga is Slinga… That is countless misfortune for MI I would say, yet glad to hear that he might take some rest before T20I, Malinga's fan would like to see him in T20I abolishing opponents.

  • POSTED BY on | April 22, 2012, 8:14 GMT

i would like to say that malinga is just out for one or max two matches and i dont think that it would effect so much . Since we are playing kings xi punjab . i think that maliga got an injury at right time since mi just play two games in that period. MY TOP FOUR TEAM ARE CSK , PWI ,MI , AND DD .

  • POSTED BY chilled_avenger on | April 22, 2012, 7:57 GMT

@lankanlioncric Ever heard of a guy named Dale William Steyn? Before calling Malinga the best bowler in the World, remember that he does not even play Test matches! Besides, even in ODIs Morne Morkel and Mitchell Johnson have similar stats as Malinga,so Malinga is not the undisputed No.1 among ODI bowlers!

  • POSTED BY on | April 22, 2012, 7:27 GMT

If Malinga returning home was bad enough, Sachin returning for M.I is worse news. Since the aging superstar will only play at the no. 1 batting position, he uses up precious overs at the start and even after getting his eye in rarely accelerates to the T20 level. At age 40, he is still a great test player, a decent ODI player but below average T20 player. Sorry ... I love Tendu but his time has come ..... hes become like what Amitabh was at 50 .... age 50 acting 40 ..... Sachin ... age 40 acting 30 .... Sorry does not work for the team ... If he wants to serve M.I he should bat at no. 4 or 5 ... same for team India in ODI's .... he should bat at no. 3 or 4 in ODIs

@ rakibul-narail-bd This is the problem with Bangladesh fans. You guys keep crying when your players are not picked for IPL and now you say IPL is the root cause of all problems. And how do you know that SL is paying for his treatment? his franchise will be the first to take care of a as is evident in the past. @lankanlioncric Kholi hit 138 not 183. Anyways malinga is needed in IPL as he is effective at death overs which is too good for domestic batsmen. @Geethike Dinith De Silva players are paid on pro rata basis but im sure franshise pay 'extra' to keep thier important players happy.

  • POSTED BY on | April 22, 2012, 3:46 GMT

Sachin should not even play any form of cricket, now that he has achieved the 100 centuries mark and leave it to youngsters.

  • POSTED BY lankanlioncric on | April 21, 2012, 21:47 GMT

its funny, when malinga had ONE bad game(when kohli smashed 183), all the indians were comparing him to zaheer khan n all 3rd rate bowler. now they claim MI will loose strength of malinga doesnt play. Malinga is one of the most consistent player in the world. he is in form almost all matches he plays. maybe in out of form for 1 or 2 games a year, whish still makes him one of the best bowler in the world, my opinion, malinga is the best bowler in the world.

  • POSTED BY Rivka on | April 21, 2012, 17:49 GMT

It is a shame that a player of Tendulkar's caliber is playing in such a sub-standard tournament. Tendulkar has probably only 2 years left to play in international cricket, and it is a great pity that the BCCI politics dictates that he should play in the IPL.

Malinga is a Huge Setback,Bt what will boost the MI'sis the return of Maestro;Still malinga nt playin is a BIG LOSS.. MI emerged as a team to beat in Last 2 seasons;Only coz of MALINGA.. this time MI is going to FIND difficult to qualify for the Playoffs as Malinga is Leaving. Another issue is the LEVI's form as GIBBS' stil warming bench has been in good form in the big bash Concluded recently.Lets keep finger crossed and hope that MI do well. The only Positive is Munaf has been Bowling Well and RP Bowled Well against DD's.This may well be blessing in Disguise For The MI's as they have Johnson,Perera; Both capable with the bat, But still the BIG NAME Malinga makes a Huge Difference while playing also and while he's not ... Wishing MI all the best wishes as they need now.. With a hope they will turn it around..

  • POSTED BY on | April 21, 2012, 14:40 GMT

Though MI have emerged as TEAM TO BEAT in last two seasons they are on backfoot as Malinga leave Due to Back-Spasms, Though Sachin's RETURN Boosts them they will find hard to qualify for PLAY-OFFS Malinga is huge asset when he plays Similarly a big Setback when he's nt playing Keeping fingers crossed Hoping Mumbai can play better cricket GOOD news is that Munaf is performing,Malinga's Injury May be Blessing in disguise As Johnson is Capable with the bat and the bowl.. Still Malinga being out of actionn is a Big Blow for The MI's..

While I feel sorry for Malinga, I have no such feelings for Mumbai Indians, given that they field mostly international Indian players only in their XI - Tendulkar, Harbhajan, RP Singh, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha, Rohit Sharma, leaving one slot for an uncapped domestic player. Their only tactical disadvantage is their ridiculous choice of a captain.

  • POSTED BY NikhilNair on | April 21, 2012, 13:58 GMT

Maling to MI is like Gayle to RCB... if Gayle or Malinga fires... opposition is doomed... but without Malinga... MI are in trouble! Will be tough time until he returns...

  • POSTED BY c3vzn on | April 21, 2012, 12:27 GMT

Look at all these doubters. Mitchell Johnson is the ideal replacement, fast, slingy and trying to prove that he deserves to play for Australia. I have a feeling he'll be a big weapon for Mumbai.

  • POSTED BY on | April 21, 2012, 12:19 GMT

lol Really ? SAD for MI n her fans. MI's skipper always had the luxury of having a bowler with unusual action which can trouble any batsman even if the delivery he bowls is NORMAL. And with toe-crushing yorkers that too with that scary action was nightmare for batsmen especially Indian domestic. Now that Malinga is gone for at least couple of weeks (And Munaf Patel turning into a spinner :P), MI will know what it takes to contain batsmen /take wickets in pressure situations. :D .... Vaise, Johnson is dangerous too and also handy with the bat :) !

with all due respect to Mumbai Indians, don't they have to take care of their contracted players when injured ? Why they sent Malinga back to Sri Lanka for treatments ? Why As a matter of fact, Malinga is semi-retired player to Sri Lanka Cricket.

  • POSTED BY on | April 21, 2012, 11:12 GMT

@Sinhaya you say he was abysmal in the CB series, i partly agree he wasn't at his best. BUT he still ended up as the Highest Wicket Taker in the tournament. That is the quality of Malinga

  • POSTED BY SL_4EVER on | April 21, 2012, 11:02 GMT

God gave him the punishment which he deserves! he retired from test cricket purely becoz of IPL money and didn't care a penny about his country. At the time he retired SL were in a huge trouble since Murali's retirement and finding very difficult in the bowling department without Murali. But SL had some relief thinking this guy would stay for few years and lead the SL's bowling attack. But he decided to retire from tests and let his country and supporters down only becoz of money. Look how pathetic when he is in the field, can't even run behind the ball and stop., giving extra runs in the field, dropping easy catches. Look how poor he bowled for SL in recent matches. I think he should be dropped from SL 11 for the T20 world cup as we don't need half-hearted players for our country. No matter how long he plays for IPL and how much money he earns, let some young full blooded bowlers to take his place in SL side. Cricinfo please publish. Thanks

  • POSTED BY on | April 21, 2012, 10:27 GMT

Without Malinga , MI bowling will be below to standards of any ordinary Team. Munaf Patel is effective only when Malinga creates pressure from the other end. Harbhajan is rarely seen taking wickets. Ojha is out of form. Now only if Pollard gets also injured , it will be RIP mumbai for 2012

  • POSTED BY riprock on | April 21, 2012, 10:25 GMT

Malinga must be dropped from the Sri Lankan ODI side. He bowled so badly in the Commonwealth Bank series. I am stunned as to how could Malinga have the world record for the 9th wicket in ODIs when he just could not even connect the ball when batting in Australia in the CB series. Malinga is cocky thinking that his place in the Lankan side is guaranteed in spite of his abysmal performance!

so Happy that Malinga will get a rest, Sri Lanka needs him to fire in the T20 World cup. and this may put an end to Mumbai Indians, without him its just another team. I think Tissara perera should play

MI gonna miss Malinga for sure...Now its extra added pressure for batsman to score runs...But one should appreciate MI team management for not forcing players to play with injury...MI needs to do well with bat...They have one of the better bowling attack...I would prefer Johnson to come in for injured Malinga...MI opners needs better start...The best thing about MI they play like a team...Hopefully Sachin provides consistency with bat...
