Chamara Silva, a middle-order batsman, has joined Sri Lanka's squad in the UAE as back up for Mahela Jayawardene, who has an injured knee. Jayawardene has returned to Sri Lanka and will miss the fifth ODI and the Twenty20 international against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

"After Sunday's game Mahela's injury got worse, so he has returned home," Sri Lanka's team manager Anura Tennekoon said. "Chamara Silva was brought in as cover."

Tennekoon said Tillakaratne Dilshan had recovered after hurting his left thumb. "Dilshan is okay and will play in the fifth one-dayer."

Sri Lanka Cricket also announced that fast bowlers Nuwan Kulasekara, Dhammika Prasad and Shaminda Eranga, as well as wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, will not be considered for the Test series in South Africa because of injuries.

Sri Lanka lost the five-ODI series against Pakistan after a third defeat in Sharjah on November 20. The final one-dayer is on November 23, followed by the T20 two days later. Sri Lanka's tour of South Africa begins with a tour match on December 9, followed by the first Test on December 15.

@shantiratnamaj, well said mate. Agree with all your points, thats what Sri Lanka cricket need at the moment

I think it's better Sri Lanka to play just 10 players for the T20 match other than brining back Chamara Silva

i do not know why the Selectors still concidering Chamara Silva for selection, for what purpose they are giving him a further chance, we have no other player to select as a cover up for Mahela from the pool of players, for the sake of Srilankan Cricket take some immidiate decisions which will defenituley give possitive results for Srilanka in futute series, however convince Murali to come back to Squad to do some magic for the Country similar decision taken by Afridi now.

Cricket is a religion in Sri Lanka. It is venerated and everybody takes it as a personal affront if Sri Lanka looses at cricket. That being said it is almost a sacred duty to give ones all ina match. The current set of jokers should be made to realise this and put on performance based contracts in future. Furthermore the coaching staff too should be put on notice and a hire and fire system should be adopted. To all intents and puposes a trained monkey could do better as coach of Sri Lanka.

The more I watch the present Sri Lankan team the more they come across as a set of buffoons who cant bat , bowl or field. Looks like it is downhill all the way for them including that magnificient T.V commentator Sanath Jayasuriya. hee! hee! hee.

No point.. No one can replace mahela. But good luck to chamara silva and hope he will do well this time.. because he is good against Pakistan.

Good that they are not considering Nuwan Kulasekara for the test matches against SA. But i'm sure we gona miss Prasanna for sure..

Actually, India is in the same boat, with the 3 Musketeers retiring soon, there is going to be a big gap in the batting, and the youngsters on offer don't seem up to it. As for the Indian bowling, it is worse than Sri Lanka's. Conversely, Pakistan seems to have a wealth of resources in all 3 forms of the game and should do well. I pick them to beat England in the UAE.

Like with a lot of things in SL cricket this makes no sense but its atleast consistent! Surely this is an opportunity to try out a new talent - everyone know Silva's talent and have dropped him for it and here we are recalling him again. Makes no sense but then again neither does alot of things with SLC right now.

I think with this kind of senseless decisions we can guess where SL cricket heading. Give youngters a chance to get experience. We dont mind failing in learning space. We dont mind loosing if the team is full with good new guys. There is no shame then. Where we will be in couple of years if this continue. Or bring Crap, Kandambi, Chamara silva and all othere loosers to play over 40 cricket soom. SL selectors ???
