Afridi says he will bounce back from lean patch

Shahid Afridi has expressed relief after playing a key role with both bat and ball in Pakistan's win against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup final. Afridi scored a critical 32 runs when Pakistan were in trouble and then bowled his 10 overs for just 28 runs to stifle Bangladesh's batsmen.

"It lifted a lot of pressure off my shoulders but more importantly it helped Pakistan win the title," Afridi told Pakistani daily the News.

Before the final, Afridi had only managed two wickets in the Asia Cup, against Bangladesh, having failed to make an impression against India and Sri Lanka. He had similar problems against England in the UAE where he took three wickets in four ODIs. His poor batting form has not helped either, with only one score above 50 in his previous 11 innings. Consequently, he has attracted criticism. Prior to the present slump, Afridi had picked up 23 scalps in nine games against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

"To my critics, I will say just one thing: haven't you heard of players going through a lean patch?" Afridi said. "It happens to even the greatest sportsmen then why is that I cannot be spared during my bad patch?"

Questions have been asked about his fitness in the media. However, Afridi refuted such doubts by saying that he has been fortunate to be injury-free for most of his playing career. "I'm fully fit at the moment and plan to continue working hard to make sure that I give my 100% for Pakistan each time I represent the country."

He said he would quit one-day internationals the day he was not able to give his best to the national side and concentrate on Twenty20 cricket. This season, Afridi has played Twenty20 matches for local franchises in Australia and in Bangladesh. However, he has opted out of the ongoing Faysal Bank Super Eight Twenty20 Cup in which he represented Karachi Dolphins for the past six seasons.

Afridi 7000 runs avg 25 and Sewag 8000 runs avg 35, Afridi 344 wkts avg 33 and Sewag 99 wkts avg 40.........remaining career possible another 5 years for Afridi and Sewag's unknown possibliy another 2 year.... I know its not all of the stats... but guys..Afridi has served our country very well above his abilities...sometimes he does not satisfy our demands but heyyyyy don't take back what he has already earned and given us so many great cricketing moments

All rounder Afridi can be part of any team in the world...everyone will take him happily....Politics aside...he is an asset for Pakistan...Ajmal, Afridi, Hafeez, sometimes Gul..these 4 people are carrying our ODI Team at the moment...if any of them struggles then whole team struggle...Misbah and Younis are just waste of space in ODIs (not saying they are done) just not good enough for ODIs

  • on March 28, 2012, 12:39 GMT

Afridi is the best and limited over & One Day matches...

  • satish619chandar on March 28, 2012, 12:27 GMT

Nothing but a a legend in his own style.. He always performs steady role in bowling and looks far more sensible with bat these days.. The team grooms Afridi to be their big hitter in middle overs by having slow Younis and Misbah to steady it for Afridi and he doesn't have much thing to do but to take risk at every chance.. It is his role and he does it.. I would have Afiridi as a spinner anyday with his slog as a bonus..

  • mwaseems on March 28, 2012, 7:07 GMT

@ tabassumkhan5 - Afridi is the one who got the biggest contract in BPL, but didn't play due to his country. @ Other Afridi Haters - Look at the records and winning matches by Afridi during last few years and compare to the rest of the team (especially the batting), no doubt in bowling he is the 2nd best after Ajmal for current Pakistani team.

  • on March 28, 2012, 6:56 GMT

Guys look at his figures on cricinfo then give comment about him....these figures are awesome as allrounder.........

  • ammarhassan on March 28, 2012, 6:51 GMT

Well Afridi was not a match winner .. but he become a match winner recently .. His performance affects the team, no doubt about that because we are heavily dependent on his bowling. His batting was always by chance, but recently he has developed a lot and won quite a few matches for us, e.g. T20 WC semi/finals. He did not bowl well against Eng and we lost 4-0.

On the other hand i suspect he is under performing deliberately. Also dont like his proud-ish statements recently. As a captain he is better than Misbah, we have seen that in WC 2011.

My conclusion , PCB needs to handle him with care. He should remain in the team.

  • getsetgopk on March 28, 2012, 6:07 GMT

@frozendilemma: If a fielding team concedes 3 runs an over in their fifty overs of bowling then the oposition will end up chasing a target of 151 but Afridi did even better than that with his 10 overs, 2.8 runs an over to go with two wickets, forget about his 32 runs with the bat his bowling figures alone are more than enough for a man of the match award. Had all the other bowlers bowled with 2.8 RPO Bangladesh would have been bundled out for 140 runs. Afridi is a champion cricketer.

  • tabassumkhan5 on March 28, 2012, 5:50 GMT

Afridi is nothing but a big mouth now. even if you click in 1 out of 20 mathches it is time to hang up your gloves. He is arrogant and plays for money only. I have no issues with people making money through their profession which is cricket for Afridi but he should stop his nationalistic rheotoric which is quite hypocritical. Otherwise why should he play 20 20 for Australian circuit, BD circuit and not for Pakistan circuit.

  • Fast_Track_Bully on March 28, 2012, 5:48 GMT

A useless cricketer really...his golden years are over and he is holding his place in the team because of the tag 'senior'!

Afridi is an ODI Legend... Undoubtedly.

  • msgg on March 28, 2012, 5:18 GMT

Afridi is the best and limited over matches are entertaining becoz of his performance and he is not the Harbajan Singh of India but he is Sehwag of Pak and he got the best average and there will be no cricketer in future to break his record.Afridi bats in once in blue moon as you dont expect Fire works or Miracle batting every match if he plays every match than there will be no interest in cricket instead of 11players only AFRIDI can beat opposite team some time big fat hens like who duck on pitch like younis khan and misbha has to play AFRIDI plays every match than what about other players they get salaries simily...............Common PCB kick waste Msiba from the team and show his to wear only white clothes which looks good on him.

  • on March 28, 2012, 4:34 GMT

Afridi should not captain the team he is a terrible captain and he should get that through his head. He said he was having a bad patch lets hope he was right if he is not playing due to captaincy he should be kicked out of the team. Better performance from him in the final I can live with him at-least trying his best.

  • AfghanIdeal on March 28, 2012, 4:16 GMT

  • DaGameChanger on March 28, 2012, 3:48 GMT

Afridi most-over rated player in Pak history. He wouldn't even qualify in most other international teams. If you look at his bowling records, most of them are against minnows. During his 15 year career, he has looked good onl yfor year ot two and rest was complete mediocre. I would rate Abdul Razzaq much much higher than this fella.

  • on March 27, 2012, 22:03 GMT

Afridi is a star performer and a definite match-winner. He should be in as captain.

Shahid Afridi is one of the aggressive batsmen of the world. Currently .... Just in 1world Afridi is the best all-rounder the BEST entertainer in the world

shahid Afridi is hero of´╗┐ Pakistan

  • Nadir.Shah on March 27, 2012, 22:02 GMT

He man-handles fans, he uses abusive language on the field (with his own team mates and opponents), he tempers (bites) the ball, he scratches the pitch yet he is hero to my countrymen. There is no reason to hit anyone, specially fans. PCB should take a note of his latest incident of hitting the fans and take a disciplinary action. As a matter of fact the individual who got hit should file charges of assault and battery. Whatever happened to, cricket being gentleman's game? Glamor is not everything but once you loose your values, your identity is lost. Boom Boom I think, your days are over or at least you have one less fan from now!

  • on March 27, 2012, 21:53 GMT

In last 2 years Afridi has one so many matches for Pakistan. Don't think there is any doubt in Afridi ability to win matches. He has said so many times, he is a bowler who can bat. Why do we expect him to play a big inning all the time. Stop complaining about Afridi. There are so many other players who should not be in team. We need Afridi. He is the match winner. Afridi needs to open batting in T-20. afridi is better captain for odi and t20 misbah only play test cricket

  • pak78 on March 27, 2012, 21:17 GMT

what can i say for afridi, wot a servant he has been for pakistan cricket with his all round performances through the years im dreading the day when he acctually retires his looks and his agression on the field and( off the field )are breath taking wot a guy his presence in a side is enough and when he performs well its magical weather it be with the bat or bowl or his fielelding alwayz gives his 200%, true super star of the game afridi bhai we love u.

  • on March 27, 2012, 21:01 GMT

    Legend? ROFL

Afridi is the Harbhajan Singh of Pakistan. Keeps getting chances regarldess of performance.

  • on March 27, 2012, 20:46 GMT

Afridi is a big persons who almost every time performs in big events. He is not a sort of person who makes century but their team losses during the process. In past, he was dropped out several times, only to be called later urgently for rescue. One of his great achievement is taking Pakistan to word Cup semis, when no one expecting it to be so. We would have won the final if Current Captain showed a better performance.

I suggest 2 steps for further improving Afridi.

    1) He should immediately be made as Captain 2)He should be provided an exclusive physical trainer for his reflexes

Afridi will continue be remain the heat throb of Millions of his Fans. We should at least respect and give confidence to our stars as those Indians do to theirs.

@rayfanatics ... 'he never performs against major teams ?' really is that what u think ? thats sad because he is always a big match player ! even his best bowling figures are against australia which is the no 1 team in the world ! he just had a lean patch ! but he is back now ! and he has been pakistan's no 1 bowler for 4 years now ! even in the semi final against india he had created so many catching chances esp of tendulkar all of which were sadly dropped !

  • Hassan.Farooqi on March 27, 2012, 17:47 GMT

@Afnan Tayyeb: Afridi has just turned 32. Compare that with 36 year old Kallis, 37 years old Pointing, almost 38 years old Misbah almost 39 year old Tendulker, and you will know he is still very young.

  • rayfanatics on March 27, 2012, 17:18 GMT

An overrated player. Any player with some sort of batting ability would make 7000 runs eventually after 16 years of international cricket. That is less than 500 runs per year. And anyone who checks his bowling records can see that he never performs against the major teams.

He won almost single-handedly T20 world cup in England 2009 and won MOM awards in s-final & final for his match winning performances.
