SLC writes to Indian board about early release of IPL players

  shares 26

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has written to the BCCI, asking whether some Sri Lanka players could be released early from the ongoing IPL to prepare for next month's Champions trophy in England, according to SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga.

The Sri Lanka board had been mulling whether to recall some of the underperforming players - who are not central to their IPL teams' plans at the moment - to allow them to play in a practice series. Now, after formally asking the Indian board, SLC is awaiting a response on the same, Ranatunga said.

"We have written to the BCCI on Monday and are waiting to hear from them whether some of the players can be released to play in the one-day triangular series, which SLC has organised as preparation for the Champions trophy," said Ranatunga. "The BCCI must get through to the respective franchises and then get back to us on whether any of the players selected for England can be released if they are not picked for the IPL matches. We know the players have a contractual obligation to the IPL teams they represent, so it is left to the franchises to make a decision to release them."

Nine of the ten Sri Lankan players playing in the IPL are part of Sri Lanka's 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy. Ajantha Mendis is the only Sri Lankan player in the IPL who is not part of the Champions Trophy squad.

SLC had earlier expressed concerns over the poor form of the Sri Lanka players in the IPL, which has led to some of them being dropped by their teams, and Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews stepping down from the captaincy of Pune Warriors.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka board had announced a domestic 50-overs tournament to be played in Pallekele between May 12 and 20. Of the three squads named for the tournament, one included the Sri Lanka team picked for the Champions trophy, minus the IPL players. "If the IPL players are released we will include them instead of the players selected to represent the Sri Lanka team in the triangular," Ranatunga said.

The other two sides in the tournament will be the Sri Lanka A team, also selected to tour the West Indies next month, and a Sri Lanka Combined side.

Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Shaminda Eranga and Chanaka Welegedara are the only players from the Champions Trophy squad, who currently figure in the Sri Lanka team named for the triangular series.

SLC asking Indian board their permision? are the SL players Or Indian Players?

  • POSTED BY on | May 12, 2013, 7:19 GMT

I'm really happy to hear that Mahela, Sanga and Dilshan will not be picked for next year IPL. I'm even more happy to hear that no SL Player will be selected for next IPL. It's clear that they want to have Dhoni's and Kholi's teams in the final. Look at the Indian players given to Sanga. Useless players. Still they managed to fight with top teams. Sanga's performances were awful but he is the only captain who did well. Mathews is a useless captain and Mahela is doing the same mistakes he did when captaining SL national team. If NZ can call their players early why can't SLCB can't. T20 and 50 over matches are different. They have to adapt to 50 overs immediately. So bring them home immediately. It's the Champions Trophy and the last time of it. Don't waste time on stupid IPL

@Danafur. yeah SL has always been underestimated before a major international tournament, but they had always done well in the recent times simple because of the fact that they play best as a unit. You have mentioned Lahiru, Chandimal and Kulasekara have not featured at ALL. Lahiru and Chandimal are not a part of this year's IPL and Kulasekara is in the CSK, since SL players are banned from playing in Chennai, the franchise is obviously looking for another bowler to fill in Kulasekara's place in both home and away games so they can find a set winning combination. Please do get your facts right!

SL players have not been at their best . no question that its dissaapointing. But you know what is the most dissapointing thing about IPL? India players . People talk about playing at home . India is home for indian players . No one , absolutely no one has player anyway near what oversea's players have performed. Gayle, Hussey, Miller, Watson, Bravo, Perera, Johnson have been the real performers . Virat, Rahane , Dravid,Kumar, Raina, and Dhoni have not let india down. But all others have underperformed . Just check the MVP segment.

If we have the kind of selectors that they have in England they will definitely fill those 5 places that I have mentioned above among the under mentioned brilliant youngsters the likes of Khausal Silva, AngeloPerera,KithruwanW, Gayan Maneshan,Shehan Jayasuriya,Ashen Silva, Sachithra Serasinghe,UmeshKarunarathna, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Madawa Warnapura; Ajantha Mendis, MalindaPushpakumara,Tharindu Khausal,DulanjanaMendis,…

A lot have been proved about the SL players at the IPL. Their standards are far below than most of the cllub players in India.IPL wil surely re consider getting any Sri Lanka player for the next IPL. Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan, Murali are playing probably the last IPL. Time for them to retire before they are thrown out of the national 20/20 team. Mathews has proved beyond doubt that he is not a Captain. he has no qualities of a captain. he's got a long long way to go. Sri Lanka has made yet another mistake by by his appointment as the Captain to the National side. Sorry but the Sri Lankans play a gentlemens game in that spirit. Good luck to all of you.

I was hoping for next Chennai match opposing teams to dictate selection of CSK team in lieu of SL players not being allowed to play there. Actually that is what every other team should have bargained for with BCCI/ CSK. The strategy should have been "I will not play 2 Sl players, you (CSK)drop the ones I tell you to, meaning two of Hussey, Raina, Jadeja, Bravo" Then we could have seen how many matches CSK would have won

Good initiative by the board. All players other than from the 4 qualifying teams should be recalled immediately and prepare for the more important champions trophy and also acclimatise themselves for colder weather conditions in England. In the past players had their training camp in Radella for this purpose.

  • POSTED BY PadMarley on | May 9, 2013, 4:37 GMT

This could well be the last IPL for Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan and Murali. With re shuffling taking place next year, and their performances this year, very unlikely franchises would put their money on them next year. And for the rest, they really have to make them count in their national encounters to be noticed for the next IPL. Its only Malinga and Perera who have been useful for their teams. Malinga is playing smart, he knows he can no longer go for the kill as he used to, and playing a good supportive role to Mt Johnson. Kushal with more opportunities would have done better. Bring them home and give some match practices!!

  • POSTED BY nilb on | May 9, 2013, 4:12 GMT

@Danufur I agree that SL players haven't perform best in the IPL, but don't forget as a team SL is still no 1 in T20 and the finalist in the last T20 world cup. Cricket is a team sport, so SL players are good as a team not as individual mercenaries.

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2013, 19:46 GMT

I think only Pererra and Malinga will be missed in the IPL. Other SL players have been out of form or they have replacements in their respective sides. Cheers.

  • POSTED BY Danufur on | May 8, 2013, 18:51 GMT

Looking at how the majority of the SL squad have preformed for their respective franchises during the IPL, SL's chances in the upcoming Champions Trophy seem very slim to say the least. Captain Angelo has been poor with the bat and his bowling is nothing special. The batting stalwarts in Mahela, Sanga and Dilshan have been woeful. Malinga has not been at his destructive best either. Thisara is inconsistent at best. Kusal, Jeevan and Sachithra have not done great in the few opportunities that they got. Plus, Vice Captain Chandimal, along with Lahiru and Nuwan have not featured at all. Agreed that the Champions Trophy is a different format, but form counts for something when it comes to competitive sports.

  • POSTED BY on | May 8, 2013, 18:13 GMT

Sanga not playing well anyway so SH shouldn't mind. Pune , Delhi , Kolkata as it is out of any chances to make top 4. K Parera not being used by RR and see no chances that will be used now. Except Malinga and T.Parera , I don't see problems for anyone else. Win Win situation for all.

Perera and malinga are the players needed by their resp franchise to stay in contention for the playoffs. Perera proved to be vital among all SL players

  • POSTED BY dravid_rules on | May 8, 2013, 17:43 GMT

Based on today's potential result, the only SL player who will be needed by IPL is Malinga and Malinga does not really need to "practice" anymore. It could be argued that he is safer in IPL doing 4 over stints rather than in SL where he will need to do 10 over stints and will be more prone to injury.

  • POSTED BY KingOwl on | May 8, 2013, 14:37 GMT

I think some teams will definitely release a few players, as they released Ross and Brendon (the kiwis). I think they will not release Thisara and Malinga. They may also not release Sanga since he is the captain of SRH. Delhi has nothing to lose, so they could release Mahela. SRH of course has everything to lose - so, they may hold on to Sanga, eventhough his contribution with the bat is far from great in T20. Angelo could be released because Pune is out. They could also release Sachithra if KKR go out - but if they remain, then I don't think he will be released.

I don't have any problems with this request. I think SLB have a point and given that some SL players are unlikely to play in the matches given the 4 foreigner rule, it is not a problem if some of these players are released early. The difference in this case and what happened in 2011 is that at that time SLB had given express permission and then later on withdrew it just to pique BCCI. A commercial venture like IPL can't run if ppl don't adhere to the consent. This time I think the request is more due to cricketing reasons and baring a few important players like Perera, Mahela and Sanga I think the others may be released. But hang on, what about Malinga? I don't think MI would be too pleased to let him go, esp since now the knock outs are upon us.

I hope that just in case some SL players are not released then SLB and SL fans see the point of BCCI and don't make another issue out of it.

It is indeed true that some of the players were not given a chance to play in this IPL however once they reach the play-off stage, the strategy could change and may use these players since other regulars may either be injured or tired. These players will be fresh and their legs move fast. I want CSK to bring Kulasekara during play-offs.

I think Sanga should just stick to test cricket. No one really notices his failings mostly because of his reputation. He definitely played a part in our loss in the World t20 finals from not being able to find the gaps and should really focus on test cricket. He's kind of like a Michael Clarke. Dodgy in the short forms of the game but sheer class in the test arena. They should have pulled them all out earlier! Firstly because of the political decision to ban them from Chennai and secondly, IT'S A DOMESTIC TOURNAMENT!! For many if it was not for their careers on the international stage, many would not have even got a contract in IPL.
