Cricket fans rejoice after Sri Lanka beat India in the World T20 final, Colombo, April 6, 2014
Sri Lanka's victory sparked jubilation across the island, with fans' celebrations having stretched long into the night © Associated Press

Sri Lanka's returning World T20 champions will have an open-top parade from the Katunayake Airport to Colombo, upon their arrival from Dhaka on Tuesday, SLC has confirmed. The team is scheduled to arrive in the country at 3pm, with the parade to begin at 4pm. Tens of thousands are expected to line the streets, with the parade set to be conducted on a much grander scale than the reception for the Asia Cup winning team, one month ago.

The team is yet to sign its contracts with the board, having departed after a tense standoff with officials, but SLC has offered the team a sum of US $1.5 million for the victory, even as negotiations are set to resume this week.

The board had initially offered a participation fee of $500,000, a further $250,000 if the team were to reach the final, and another $250,000 for winning the tournament, but that pay structure had seemingly been rejected by the players, who wished to have a 12% cut of the ICC's tournament payment to SLC reinstated in their contracts. If the $1.5 million is accepted by the players, they will have received a figure roughly equivalent to 17% of the funds SLC is expected to receive from the ICC.

Congratulations for the Sri Lanka team had poured in from around the world, with Jason Gillespie, Kevin Pietersen and Michael Vaughan among those voicing their appreciation on twitter. At home, a host of local celebrities have joined the chorus.

The victory sparked jubilation across the island, with fans' celebrations having stretched long into the night in several major centres, while Sri Lanka's team manager said the team had themselves been singing and celebrating for hours after the victory. Sri Lanka also reclaimed the top ranking in Twenty20 cricket with the win, moving three points clear after India had briefly become the top-ranked team during the tournament. Sri Lanka had held the top ranking since their 2012 World T20 campaign.

Congratulate Lankin's

Posted by Johnny_129 on (April 10, 2014, 2:32 GMT)

Most hearty CONGRATULATIONS to SL I first started watching cricket when SL visited NZ with Ranatunga leading the team. In that series SL looked like a team barely able to get a wicket - I remember Martin Crowe scoring 299 in a Test match only to get out to Ranatunga. Since then, SL has gone on to with 2 WC's!! SL is the most improved side in cricket and Jayawardene & Sangakara deserve to bow out as winners.

Posted by Fakhre-Alam on (April 8, 2014, 18:56 GMT)

welldone lanka. SL is the only team i love so much other than pak team. players are very nice and humble. a well deserved victory. Love from Pakistan

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 18:43 GMT)

it is really a shame that some indian fans attacked yuvis' house. some indian fans try to underestimate sri lankan victory. stop talking rubbish and try to admire winners. try to live like a gentleman coz this is a gentlemans game.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 18:17 GMT)

We are waited 18 years for this beautiful moments. Congratulations my btothers.we love you.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 17:15 GMT)

yeaaah.. we are crazy fans of cricket..we gave heroic welcome when we win or lose.

Posted by rk_ks on (April 8, 2014, 17:10 GMT)

@THEBEAST7: I do agree that throwing stones at Yuvraj house was bad thing. Bu you love your cricketers no matter what. Read the comments when SL lost to England and you will know the support you are talking about. And read the comments again when SL lost the last four worldcups. You will have a clear answer. Don't try to project that SL people are worlds best in everything. It's the common attitude of a human being and Indian fans took this personall which is very wrong.

Posted by Binyoo on (April 8, 2014, 16:59 GMT)

Well Done Sri Lanka. U fully deserve this honor. I always admire your potential of playing as a unit. I hope we (Pakistani team) could learn from it.

Posted by rk_ks on (April 8, 2014, 16:49 GMT)

@Ramansilva: No it was team which won 3 finals out of 4 in the last 8 years in global tournaments, unlike a team which won 1 out 5 and that too won the final because, they were already playing in from like 200 years continuosly. Where as India team just arrived in Bangladesh and started performing well.

Posted by shane-oh on (April 8, 2014, 15:18 GMT)

@siddharth_r2001 and @wonderstar1 - gosh, do either of you realise just how bitter and sour you sound?

Posted by vihnga_De_cptan on (April 8, 2014, 14:39 GMT)

Well played lions....We were looking for this moment since many many years.Finaly our heros did it.Thank you very much...

Posted by wonderstar1 on (April 8, 2014, 14:38 GMT)

well said sidhartha. we all Indians are congratulating them on their win while these people keep on saying we don't have a good team and keep saying we won by luck and we don't have big future all unwanted things.. None of these people even congratulated us on winning the WC 2011 if you go thru the comments section. I cant understand logic behind this. we have won the Global tournaments like CT and WC 2011 and just missed this finals. How can we be termed as mediocre team? we are more than happy and proud of how we have performed in all three Global icc events. we don't care who appreciates it or not.But they themselves know very well somewhere deep inside the heart ho well we have performed.

Posted by siddharth_r2001 on (April 8, 2014, 13:20 GMT)

@Ramansilva: Mate, get your facts right! It was NOT the no. 1 ranked team that lost in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand!

Posted by KK_SL on (April 8, 2014, 13:15 GMT)

Watching it live on the TV. Thousands gather Katunayake - Colombo road to welcome heroes. Proud to be a Sri Lankan.. Welcome World T20 Champions !!!

Posted by siddharth_r2001 on (April 8, 2014, 13:14 GMT)

@MelbourneMiracle: That was my point exactly. Enjoy and celebrate the victory instead of moaning about someone else's luck. You know your successes are few and far between when your cricket board arranges an open-top bus parade for winning something as measly as the Asia Cup!

Posted by tanstell87 on (April 8, 2014, 12:17 GMT)

well played Lankan lions....the SL fans deserved this more than anyone else....i was heartbroken when India lost 2003 World Cup final but on Sunday i was not as Mahela & Sangakarra have done wonders to Sri Lankan cricket....& after all previous heartbreaks for Sri lankan was neceessary that SL win & a great win for T20 Champions over World Champions....India fan from Mumbai

Posted by wonderstar1 on (April 8, 2014, 12:11 GMT)

@Ramansilva Just enjoy your victory why do you want to drag India into this? we just lost one game and for that you are questioning our No.1 ability in Tests that was two years ago. I tell you India were the deserved Champions of WC 2011 and CT 2013 and so as SL were deserved winners of this T20.It all ends there. nothing is luck everything is thru hard works and the team that plays best on the day wins. In the past two months SL is better than most teams including India. If you want to do comparison then compare the last 10 or 15 ODIs between India and SL and you will see how well India has dominated SL. India has been the better team in the last 2 years than SL and its a fact. You were just better two days ago and did well in the Asia only the last 2-3 matches to come to conclusion.

Posted by PrasPunter on (April 8, 2014, 11:44 GMT)

Sanga is a class-act !! Got to be the best wicket-keeper batsman around !! Though I have not followed the tournament much, I could see what it means to the fans of SL. They deserve this victory. Enjoy it !! Have a nice time !!

Posted by THEBEAST7 on (April 8, 2014, 11:27 GMT)

Welcome home LIONS!!! We love you and you deserve this welcome...

Posted by THEBEAST7 on (April 8, 2014, 11:20 GMT)

Dont blame this on Yuvi fellow indians. He won you the 2011 WC. it was just a one bad day at a bad time... Malinga had a bad day in 2012 T20 WC final. Yes we were heart broken. But we dont gang up and throw stones at his residence... No player purposely play bad in a final.. they too are humans and humans make mistakes. accept that. Think of how many games he has won single handedly for ur country in the past. give him a break.

Posted by THEBEAST7 on (April 8, 2014, 11:13 GMT)

Thank you Mahela, Thank you Sanga, Thank you for the whole team. Thank you for making us happy and proud....

I'm gonna be there!!!!! along with hundreds of thousands of others. Can't wait!

Posted by Ramansilva on (April 8, 2014, 10:02 GMT)

@siddharth_r2001, Was that your No.1 team that was hammered in Australia and South Africa. Was that the team that lost to Rank 8 team in New Zealand. Was that the team that lost to the ultimate winners on Sunday in Dhaka.

Posted by Ramansilva on (April 8, 2014, 9:56 GMT)

@Subair Mohamed, Malinga was lucky to get Mahela, Kumar and Angelo to say what to do next. It will be a daunting task for him when Mahela and Kumar ar not around. Yes, the trick worked out in WT20 but I hope sanity will prevail in future.

Posted by Ammo666 on (April 8, 2014, 9:52 GMT)

IND should have invite SL to go via IND so that millions of IND'n fans could also wish them with flower garlands ;D

Posted by ground-boy on (April 8, 2014, 9:14 GMT)

Welcome home boys. You will have to appeal for your deserving fair shares(%) . Giving it a cricketing scenario may I mention that this appeal is not to get the index finger raised form SLC who struggled with moments of pain before team departure. SL fans are so much happy to welcome lions for their untiring 200% efforts ……;with open hearts ……….

CONGRATS sri Lankan brothers and sisters....I just registered to write this to you guys....I am from Pakistan and i have two teams Pakistani and Srilankan.....I am glad that the great sanga and mahela won the cup for you in their last t20.....Very well done......Indians learn to accept defeat its part of the game...Yuvi is a legend and throwing stones at his home is INSANE.....Be human and take game as game not war.....

Open parade is getting common when big events are won.Fans deserve this no matter what others say. Even IPL teams did this in SA but this is international tournament @disco_bob If you don't like perhaps you could stay out away from that. But Aussies also celebrated bus parade in 1999 WC

Posted by CricketPissek on (April 8, 2014, 7:51 GMT)

@disco_bob - not sure which country you're from mate, but in SL that's how we celebrate major worldwide achievements. I wonder if you made a similar comment when the England team merely won a bilateral Test series in 2005 (i.e. The Ashes). Not only were they parading around London on an open top bus, but they were all awarded MBEs too! Sri Lankans have been waiting for 18 long years to win a major ICC tournament, and Twenty20 is the future. How can you begrudge the people and the players of this? 4 losses in Finals and the players were still welcomed back as heroes with garlands and drummers - for trying their best. When they were finally able to get that monkey off their back and hold their nerve to push through the final on Sunday, you think it's over the top to celebrate by greeting the faithful fans like this? Unless you are a Sri Lankan who has suffered heartache after heartache of falling at the final hurdle FOUR times in FIVE years, you wouldn't appreciate this

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 7:44 GMT)

Indians, Yuviraj helped you guys to give victorious moments. Made us lions worry for sometime. He was your pride. He decided to try again after going through Cancer treatments. One game was enough to throw stones at his home? We lost many finals and our players still were our HERO. We welcomed with parades just like how we're going to welcome them as WT20 champions.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 7:36 GMT)

Well Played and should be appreciated. Should be received like heroes and they are the heroes.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 7:33 GMT)

Srilankan got to be the best nation amongst cricket playing , at least. I have no words for their humbleness. Pakistanis can learn a lot if they want to from Lankans. Regards Love and Congrats from Pakistan

Posted by miname on (April 8, 2014, 7:28 GMT)

It's the team ahead of individuals. Have a look at the highest run scores for the tournament; there are no Sri Lankan batters. Also go through the highest wicket takers for the tournament, again not a single Sri Lankan in the list. What does it implies: NONE OF US IS GOOD AS ALL OF US. This is how Sri Lankans played their game and will continue play. Respect for Sanga and Mahela for amazing sportsmanship.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 7:17 GMT)

Indian fans how can you say it is luck we were the number one ranked team before the tournament you were the number two team. Number one team beat the number two team. The objective criteria is correct. You can have number of subjective measurements. Other thing matches played between two sides India has won 3 where as Sri Lanka has won 3. If Netherlands won the World Cup beating you it can be luck. If no. 1 beat no. 2 it is mere formality. You may show your colors to low ranked teams. When you meet number 1 often number 1 will dominate number 2. It is ICC ranking t20

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 7:02 GMT)

We are really happy for sri lanka and what a way to leave T 20 same like Younus khan of Pakistan .We miss you sanga and Mahela

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 6:37 GMT)

back to back cups...awsome... thanks all the fans from pakistan who support us all the way to up here. and to bangladesh and indian fans who wishing us before and after the victory as well. . it's hero time... welcome home ...

Posted by anurag70 on (April 8, 2014, 6:11 GMT)

Congrats Sri Lanka, Specuially to Sanga and Mahela.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 5:55 GMT)

Indian fans, time to call a truce. Cricket should be played played and watched in the spirit that the game has exemplified over centuries. May the best team win and fans should cheer good cricket played by the home and visiting teams the same manner. Sanjay Manjekar pointed out Inbdia has one billion in the country and millions of diaspora , while Sri Lanka is a tiny Island. Do respect the underdogs! Let's play cricket! NJ/LA

Posted by Reezmayan on (April 8, 2014, 5:48 GMT)

@vipinchirackal, great excuse blame the luck. IND and SL have played million times against SL but yet IND played like school boys against SL bowling. yes yuvraj ad a off day its not SLs fault why did they picked him to play. Its the bowling of SL and school boy batting of IND made SL win. Kholi scored 7 of 8 balls, dhoni scored 4 of 7 balls and Yuvraj 4 of 9 balls in the last 4 overs. DOES IT LOOK LIKE LUCK? simply IND couldn't score in last 4 overs

Posted by cricket2u on (April 8, 2014, 5:35 GMT)

if anybody try to explain this win according to luck most of final win according to luck such as kula drop catch in 2011 50-50 world cup,2014 drop kohli catch by malinga etc and also if any body argue rain help sri lankan balers showing how good there death bowling.

Posted by cricket2u on (April 8, 2014, 5:22 GMT)

2014=1996 sanga glance = aravinda glance mayya late cut = aruna late cut

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 4:53 GMT)

@Lin Comp - Yes we won. luck may have played a small part as it always does in cricket, but our team played really well and were superior to the Indian team that day - Having said that there is NOTHING humiliating in the defeat. Dhoni has been one of India's greatest captains and you need to learn to show some respect to worthy opposition who ended up on the losing side on a particular day. What is more humiliating than a loss is the reactions of some fans (in both camps).

disco_bob: if you consider the T20 World cup to be insignificant then you are on the wrong website bub. But let's be honest here, you're just a bit salty about all of this :D it's all let it all come out. Tell us how you really feel

On topic: Wish I was there myself. They deserve the most grand welcome we are capable of providing. Win or lose we love them

@siddharth_r2001: Chill bro!! It is our turn to celebrate the way we want. Don't ever forget that India won a world title in 2007 only after 24 years.

Open top parade, for an insignificant T20 tournament is rather farcical. Someone has to say it.

Posted by SUPER_SIX on (April 8, 2014, 3:17 GMT)

Yes..There will be a great welcome for our lions. Specially because they thrashed India & has taken the revenge for 2011 WC nicely..

I am an Australian, and therefore obviously want Australia to always win. My next favourites are Sri Lanka and Pakistan. To the Sri Lanka team and your nation, I applaud you. I was so happy that you guys won the CUP.

Kumar Sangakkara amd Mahela Jayawardene, you are GIANTS of our beloved game, NOT merely because you are such GOOD PLAYERS, but you are GENTLEMEN. You BOTH prove, that as good as you are, you can still be humble. You are incredible "role models". You are the opposite of a KP. I have complete admiration and respect for you, and thank you for giving me so much pleasure. watching you.

Go SRI LANKA. ENJOY your richly deserved celebrations.

Whether they win or not SL is the most endeared team for many around the globe. Only just for the brand of cricket they play. And they have players like Dilshan, Malinga, Sanga and Mahela and many others who are totally unassuming and play for the pride of playing for the country.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2014, 0:43 GMT)

Now, all the cups rest in Asia. Its good to see. Congratulations Sri Lanka, celebrate well. I am a die hard Indian fan and will not hate on Yuvi.

Posted by siddharth_r2001 on (April 8, 2014, 0:34 GMT)

@Lin Comp: SL managed to win ONE out of so many finals in World Cups, yet you call Dhoni as the lucky one? He has won a T20 World Cup, an ODI World Cup, a Champions Trophy, been captain of a Test side that was No. 1 for close to 2 years (btw, tell me when SL have been no. 1 in Test cricket. Oh wait.......NEVER!!!). Achievements over such a long period cannot be just "luck".

SL has managed to beat India and all credit to them and to Malinga. So as an SL fan, enjoy and celebrate the victory instead of moaning about someone else's luck. For all you know, SL's next victory in a World Cup event may only come a further 18 years from now!!

Posted by   on (April 7, 2014, 17:46 GMT)

Doni looked so ordinary when another captain has more luck than him (in the form of Malinga). doni was so lucky all these years and most of his wins are from luck rather than anything else. he has no special captain talents, tremendous luck made it look like he is a brilliant captain but the truth is he is so lucky. I am glad that now there is another captain (Malinga) who has more luck than doni, so doni cannot have his proprietary rights on winning the toss and electing to bat first anymore, and finally a humiliating loss to doni.
