Danielle Hazell, a 21-year-old allrounder, has been called into the England women's squad for the ICC World Twenty20 after Anya Shrubsole was ruled out with a back injury.
Hazell has yet to make her international debut but impressed the selectors during a practice match against the full England side at Loughborough last week.
"We are obviously hugely disappointed that Anya has been withdrawn from the England squad on the eve of the ICC World Twenty20 as she would undoubtedly have played a significant part in the team's campaign," said Clare Connor, the ECB head of women's cricket.
"However, we want to ensure that Anya, who is still only 17 years old, has ten successful years ahead of her playing for England. The advice of the ECB's chief medical officer and the women's physiotherapist was utterly clear and now the experts will work on a rehab programme for Anya to follow once we know the results of her scan.
"One player's disappointment is another player's opportunity and we welcome Danielle Hazell in to the squad as Anya's replacement."
England begin their tournament against India, at Taunton, on June 11.
