Summary of the third round of Under-19 World Cup group matches

07-Feb-2006

Group A
New Zealand beat Uganda by 122 runs
Scorecard
After their opening loss to Bangladesh on Sunday, New Zealand finally clicked into shape on Tuesday against Uganda. Uganda's captain Hamza Almuzahim put New Zealand into bat who piled up 259 for 6. Despite 67 from Todd Astle, they slipped to 152 for 5 and were indebted to Kieran Noema-Barnett (67) and Ronald Karaitiana (43*) to take them to their respectable total. Uganda, too, showed signs of improvement; their bowling was incisive and accurate and a vast development on their effort against Pakistan on Monday. Uganda were then blown away for 137 although, to their credit, they nearly survived the full 50 overs. Dean Bartlett took 5 for 30, including the top four Ugandans, while their captain, Hamza Almuzahim, top-scored with 27.
Group B
South Africa beat USA by 162 runs
Scorecard
South Africa swept to a 162-run win over USA after dismissing them for just 115. Craig Alexander devasted the USA's top-order, removing Sumon Bari with the first ball of their innings, followed by Akeem Dodson the next ball. The USA never recovered, although Dunae Nathaniel did chance his arm with a 38-ball 41. After Alexander's initial burst - he ended with 3 for 26 from eight overs - Richard das Neves spun the South Africans to victory with 5 for 29, as USA were dismissed in the 30th over. Earlier, South Africa's batsmen had laid a solid platform, although their top four disappointed to fall cheaply. Mrunal Patel and Nisarg Patel has South Africa tottering on 100 for 4, but Dean Elgar played a captain's innings of 79 and, together with Craig Kieswetter - whose 80 came from just 66 balls - they reached 277 for 8.
