Sri Lanka Cricket has cancelled all the remaining club tournaments this season, including several first-class matches, because of the Boxing Day tsunami after a request from several coastal clubs.
"These clubs, which had lost players and equipments, have indicated their inability to continue playing in these tournaments," said a Sri Lanka Cricket media release.
The tournaments to be abandoned include the first-class plate and relegation competitions, the first division Sara Trophy semi-finals and final and the Premier League Limited Over semi-finals and final.
The worst affected club in the island is believed to be Hambantota Cricket Club, a Division 2 side that was pushing for promotion to the Sara Trophy, but tragically lost seven of its players.
The board will go-ahead with the four-day provincial tournament with rescheduled dates and just four sides after the decision to disband Uva Province which competed in the inaugural tournament last year.
The four-team tournament will start on February 5 with the final of the round-robin to be played on March 3. All the national players will participate providing there are no clashes with tsunami fundraising games.
