South Africa v England 1999-2000

At Cape Town, January 26 (day/night)

15-Apr-2001
At Cape Town, January 26 (day/night). South Africa won by one run. Toss: South Africa.
England began the final over nine runs from victory, but Kallis bowled Caddick with the second ball and maintained a full length that gave little away. Gough, needing four from the last ball, could manage only two. England had been well placed at 72 for one in the 18th over, but Hick and Knight fell in successive overs and the momentum was lost. By the time Adams was out for 42 in the 43rd over, the asking-rate had risen above seven. Read and Ealham raised hopes as they put on 39, taking 16 off the parsimonious Pollock in the penultimate over, but the final task proved too great. Kallis had already played a vital hand when South Africa batted, top-scoring with 43; Cronje shared important partnerships with him and Klusener. Gough continued to thrive and his three wickets took his total in one-day internationals to 115, level with Phillip DeFreitas. Only Ian Botham, with 145, had more for England.
Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis. Attendance: 20,008.
