South Africa v India, 2010-11
Wisden's review of the first ODI, South Africa v India, 2010-11
15-Apr-2011
At Kingsmead, Durban, January 12, 2011 (day/night). South Africa won by 135 runs. Toss: South
Africa.
One-sided one-dayers can be very boring, and this was no exception. Amla spanked 50 from 36
balls to ignite the South African innings, and a fourth-wicket stand of 131 in 22 overs between de
Villiers and Duminy - including 45 in the five-over batting powerplay, called early - gave it stability.
But wickets kept tumbling, and what should have been a total well in excess of 300 eventually fell
11 short. Oddly, India's front-line bowlers were initially very expensive, and it was the part-timers,
expected to be a liability, who put the brakes on. Kohli showed touches of class during his 54, but
Tsotsobe quickly had Tendulkar caught at third man with a clever bouncer, and added the last three
to finish with four for 31. Steyn made the first breakthrough then, in the 30th over, ended India's
hopes by dismissing Kohli. Morkel, meanwhile, proved almost unplayable and finished with two for
12 from his five overs.
Man of the Match: L. L. Tsotsobe.
