Vaughan fails but Yorkshire rally

Anxious England followers hoping for news of Michael Vaughan's knee won't have learned much from his appearance against Hampshire on the first day at Headingley. He made just 1 before edging Billy Taylor, who had already bowled him off a no-ball earlier than over. Taylor then celebrated his scalp by claiming Yorkshire's other opener, Matthew Wood, shortly after. James Bruce struck at the other end in between those wickets to leave the home side reeling at 13 for 3. But they had climbed to a much healthier 323 for 8 by the close, thanks to half-centuries from Michael Lumb and Tim Bresnan, who was unbeaten on 79 at stumps.

Andrew Hall and Min Patel took three wickets apiece as Warwickshire crumbled for 237 at Tunbridge Wells. Ian Bell top scored with 48, but Warwickshire were always up against it after the loss of opener Nick Knight for a duck. Kent's bowlers punctured the momentum at regular intervals - never allowing any pair to put together a partnership of note. Kent made a cautious start to reply, and were 8 for no loss from eight overs.

Lance Klusener's quick-fire century turned round Northamptonshire's fortunes against Leicestershire. He and Ben Philips put on 140 for the seventh wicket to leave them considerably more secure at the end of the day than the beginning, when Mohammad Asif took three early wickets to leave them reeling at 19 for 3. Wickets tumbled steadily thereafter until Klusener soothed their troubles with 122 to take them to 331. His century came from 138 balls, with 14 fours. And then, just to keep up the momentum, Matthew Nicholson took two early wickets to leave Leicestershire stumbling at 18 for 2.

Andy Caddick and Charl Willoughby bowled Somerset in a decent position against Glamorgan in Swansea, only for Somerset to lose five wickets for 93 in reply. Somerset's opening pace pairing took three wickets apiece in various spells to dismiss the home side for 223 in 65.3 overs. There were three wickets too for Keith Parsons. But then wickets fell away for Somerset to leave the game wide open.

Ronnie Irani struck his 25th first-class hundred to lift Essex to 365 for 9 against Surrey at Whitgift School. The visitors were cruising at 213 for 4 but Ian Salisbury burst their bubble, ripping the heart out of the middle order and four wickets tumbled for 14 runs, all of them to Salisbury. Still, the captain Irani remained unbeaten on 122 by the close. Earlier, Varun Chopra continued to prove his worth in the Essex first team with 42. Having started his first-team career in style last week with a century and a fifty, Chopra continued to ooze class.
