David Warner's quick fire 65 runs from just 51 balls helped Hyderabad beat Mumbai by 15 runs in their Indian T20 league match played in Dubai on Wednesday. Warner came to the crease in the fifth over after his team had lost openers Aaron Finch and Shikhar Dhawan for just 38 runs.
Warner and partner KL Rahul began cautiously and managed just one boundary in the first eight overs they faced. The cautious approach lasted till the 13th over after which Warner cut loose. He first hit Kieron Pollard for a boundary and then launched Pragyan Ojha for a six over deep midwicket.
Warner hit two-more sixes before falling in the 19th over for 65. The late spurt in the run-rate helped Hyderabad set a sizable 172 in their innings.
Mumbai's batsmen continued their woeful form and managed just 157 in reply. Pollard top scored with 78 from 44 balls but the others failed to make an impact. Mumbai, the defending champions, are still without a win and are languishing at the bottom of the table this season.
Hyderabad's coach, Tom Moody, said the Warner-Rahul partnership helped his team set up the win.
"I thought Mumbai bowled particularly, thankfully the experience and quality of David Warner came through, like it did in the last game we played here against Delhi. He was patient and then made them pay," he said.
"KL Rahul was exceptional as well. His maturity and tempo out there was beyond his age. He's had a consistent start and it was nice for him to kick on."
The Hyderabad captain, Dhawan, lauded his bowlers for stifling Mumbai's batsmen. "Bowlers bowled really well under pressure, especially Irfan and Bhuvi."
