WEST INDIES v PAKISTAN 1957-58

West Indies won by eight wickets, Sobers hitting a century in each innings. After holding West Indies to a lead of two runs, Pakistan could not prevent heavy scoring by their opponents in the second innings, which led to a comfortable win and decided the series. Rahman, a leg-break bowler sent to reinforce Pakistan's injury-hit side, made his first Test appearance only two days after arrival. Saeed Ahmed and Hanif Mohammad, in a cautious third-wicket stand, ensured that Pakistan would build up a useful total, although Gilchrist produced occasional bursts of lively fast bowling. Saeed hit one 5 and sixteen 4's in his first Test century. Sobers and Walcott thrashed the Pakistan bowlers in a brilliant second-wicket stand of 269, but the youthful left-arm slow bowler, Nasimul, troubled later batsmen in a fine spell. Sound batting by Wazir Mohammad, unlucky not to gain a century and Kardar helped Pakistan to a useful second innings score, despite steady bowling by Gibbs and Smith. Pakistan's chances suffered a heavy blow at the start of West Indies' second innings. After bowling only four overs, Fazal Mahmood, who had been struck on the knee when batting, had to go to hospital with leg trouble. Without him, the attack lacked penetration and Hunte and Kanhai began with a stand of 125 before Sobers scored his second century of the match.
