Pakistan v United Arab Emirates

Wisden's review of the sixth match, Pakistan v United Arab Emirates

15-Apr-2017
At Mirpur, February 29, 2016 (floodlit). Pakistan won by seven wickets. ‡United Arab Emirates 129-6 (20 overs) (Shaiman Anwar 46); Pakistan 131-3 (18.4 overs) (Umar Akmal 50*, Shoaib Malik 63*; Amjad Javed 3-36). MoM: Shoaib Malik. T20I debut: Mohammad Nawaz (Pakistan). After their hiding by India two days earlier, Pakistan might have hoped for an easier affair. That seemed likely when their pace trio reduced the UAE to 12-3 in four overs; after 11, they had limped to 41-4. But Shaiman Anwar and the lower-middle order hacked, heaved, edged and blasted them to a respectable 129, despite Mohammad Amir sending down 21 dot balls. Pakistan then fell foul of UAE captain Amjad Javed, whose medium-pace claimed three wickets in five legitimate deliveries and left them floundering at 17-3. Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik read the situation intelligently: after realising the threat presented by the UAE attack, they waited until they were well set before going on the offensive. Between them, they hit nine fours and six sixes, and put on 114* for the fourth wicket - a Twenty20 international record until it was broken six days later by Australia's David Warner and Glenn Maxwell.
