Tea Sri Lanka 190 for 1 (Nissanka 93*, Chandimal 54*) trail Bangladesh 247 (Shadman 46, Mushfiqur 35, Dinusha 3-22, Asitha 3-51) by 57 runs
Taijul Islam trapped Lahiru Udara lbw, ten short of a maiden Test fifty, but that was the extent of Bangladesh's success as Sri Lanka dominated yet another session in the second Test in Colombo.
Pathum Nissanka was unbeaten on 93 with Dinesh Chandimal alongside him on 54, the pair having put on a partnership of 102 off 160 deliveries. It was Chandimal's 50th score of 50 or more in Tests, while Nissanka was nearing his fourth Test ton. Sri Lanka scored 107 runs in the second session and had reduced the deficit to just 57.
The Bangladesh bowlers were not able to string together any periods of concerted pressure on the hosts. The seamers, in particular, got some stick, with Ebadot Hossain going at five an over, while Nahid Rana was taken for 37 across his seven overs. Neither were able to stick to the consistent lines and lengths that had served Sri Lanka's seamers well.
But it was Nayeem Hasan, Bangladesh's best bowler in the first Test, who took the most punishment - his five overs going for 35. Much of this owed to a destructive second over in which Nissanka and Chandimal combined to take him for three boundaries in four deliveries, as he erred either too short or too full.
Nayeem settled down after that, but his confidence was shaken by the burst, and he was unable to find those nagging lengths that had made him such a difficult proposition in Galle.
The only periods in which Bangladesh managed to keep the scoring quiet were when Taijul and Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled in tandem, but in the knowledge that runs were available elsewhere, Sri Lanka's batters were happy to ride these lulls only to make up for it later on.
It was during one of these sombre periods that Bangladesh picked up their sole breakthrough. In the third over after lunch, Taijul got one to slide on with the arm as Udara pushed forward to defend. There was a big chunk of bat on it, so the appeal was turned down, but upon review, it was revealed that it had been marginally pad first.
Chandimal's entry did anything but slow the scoring, as he was always keen to hit out to release any pressure being built, as highlighted by the slog-swept six off Taijul off just his seventh ball faced.
Chandimal was also fortunate in that he had an edge to slip fall short early on, while he was given out leg before on 30, but the subsequent review showed the ball missing leg stump. But such moments were few and far between as Sri Lanka took firm control of this Test.
