What a day of Ranji cricket. I expected no less from today. The last two rounds of Ranji Trophy are always thrilling. And these results have left us with the promise of another thrilling round. Well done Mumbai and MP. Thanks for the entertainment. Till next time, okay bye

8.45am
Two matches are already over. Three are set for tight chases. In two others, teams are looking for big innings win and need 10 wickets today. Another match depends on how well Mumbai time their declaration. The other four will low-key, but that's okay. India-Pakistan can wait. We have superb Ranji matches lined up. Welcome to the final day of the eighth round

5.15pm - Lots to watch out for
Kerala and Vidarbha have surged back into contention with outright wins today. For tomorrow we have quite a few tantalisingly poised games. In Jammu, Himachal are 32 for 1 chasing 235 for win. In Jaipur, Shitanshu Kotak and Sheldon Jackson have opened for Saurashtra. They are 11 for 0 chasing 306. Punjab will start batting tomorrow, needing 231 to win in Valsad. In Indore, a declaration will arrive at some point. UP have disappointed by not declaring and killing the game off, ironically after their captain (Suresh Raina) earlier had a moan about other captains not declaring. Anyway, we have enough thrills tomorrow. Do join us

9.15am Your week has just started, but we are already midway into the Ranji week. An exciting day in prospect with Vidarbha, Kerala and Himachal pushing for wins today. Also, Punjab-Gujarat's lead will be decided, and Mumbai-MP and Railways-Hyderabad promise close fights for three points. Zaheer Khan and Pragyan Ojha's bowling will be on show. As will be Amit Mishra's, who was selected for India yesterday. Welcome

5.10pm Another eventful day

5.10pm Another eventful day. A day on which Nos 7 and 9 scored double-centuries, and in another match a N0. 8 notched up a century. Another team was bowled out in 50.2 overs. A bowler threatened to take all 10 before he ran out of steam and needed help from his team-mates. A dour opener carried his bat through, only the second from Mumbai. Tomorrow is a big day. A few first-innings leads will be decided, a few games will reach conclusions, and the remaining will be set up for a final-day finish. Do join us tomorrow. Cheers

5.10pm Another fine day of Ranji Trophy cricket

5.10pm Another fine day of Ranji Trophy cricket. Not much individual glory, but that doesn't matter much. Only two centuries and one five-for. Jharkhand bowled out for 120, J&K for 175. Punjab and Odisha are close to bowling their opponents out too. Those are the four matches that look most likely to produce outright results. Fighting day elsewhere. I'll join you tomorrow with more. Cheers

4.35 pm Six wins, six draws
Not a bad round at all, yet again, in terms of outright results. Wins for Madhya Pradesh (over group leaders and red-hot Punjab), Bengal, Railways, Delhi, Services and Kerala. The points table will be updated soon. We'll see you all next Ranji round, starting on Saturday, December 22, with all the updates and tidbits.
Speaking of tidbits, I'll leave you with this story from Sharda Ugra, about the Roshanara Club: "Amrit Mathur, best known as CEO of Delhi Daredevils, visited Roshanara and told of his days playing college cricket for St Stephens. There were only three matches that St Stephens played outside their college: vs Hindu College, vs Services at the Air Force ground (now turned into a golf course) and the third at the Roshanara, which was looked forward to with great enthusiasm, because at lunch time, beer was part of the menu!" College kids, playing cricket, having free lunch and beer. The beautiful life.
