Luke Wells' first century of the season soothed Lancashire's current pain and helped them just about shade the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship match against Derbyshire at Emirates Old Trafford.
The home side's players began the day at the bottom of Division Two and with their director of cricket Mark Chilton's warning that he would make the changes necessary to get their season "back on track" fresh in their minds.

Half-centuries from Tom Lammonby and Archie Vaughan guided Somerset into a healthy position on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division One match with Sussex at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.
Lammonby hit 60 and 19-year-old Vaughan a career-best 70 not out as a shuffled Somerset batting line-up posted 317 for six in warm sunshine after losing the toss. James Rew contributed 46 and Tom Abell 42 on a wicket offering just enough assistance to seam and spin to keep the Sussex bowlers interested throughout the day.

Villiers shines with bat and ball as Durham beat Essex

Mady Villiers and Mia Rogers shared a stand of 98 as Durham made it back-to back wins in the Metro Bank One-day Cup women's competition with a six-wicket victory over hosts Essex.
Rogers led the charge with an unbeaten 66, while Villiers, back on what was her home ground for more than a decade until her move north over the winter made 46 as the visitors recovered from 55 for 3 to win with 70 balls to spare.

Overseas star Charli Knott undermined Somerset with bat and ball as Hampshire won an absorbing Metro Bank women's One-Day Cup contest by 31 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern Method at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton.
The Australian all-rounder top-scored with 64 from 102 balls and staged stands of 46, 40 and 42 with Maia Bouchier, Georgia Adams and Rhianna Southby for the second, third and fourth wickets respectively after Hampshire had won the toss. Southby contributed a useful 46 from 64 balls and Bouchier made 39 as the visitors were dismissed for 213 in 50 overs, Alex Griffiths taking 2 for 24 and weighing in with a catch and two run-outs.

Matt Critchley, Michael Pepper dig in to deliver unlikely draw for Essex

Matt Critchley and Michael Pepper knuckled down for a monumental fifth-wicket stand of 154 in 77 overs to steer Essex to the unlikeliest of Rothesay County Championship draws against Yorkshire at Chelmsford.
The pair came together in the depths of despair at 45 for 4 on the third evening and batted for four-and-a-half hours together, spanning 458 balls, and looking to have made it through two complete sessions on the final day. Pepper, though, fell to the last ball before tea after a 229-ball 68 that included five fours and two sixes.
