Division One

Nottinghamshire ended the first day on top against Kent owing to hundreds from Stephen Fleming and David Hussey who took the hosts to 381 for 5 at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire were in a spot of trouble after Fleming, the captain, chose to bat as Kent reduced them to 61 for 3. Fleming and Hussey were resolute, however, staging a fighting fourth-wicket partnership of 164. It was Hussey's fourth hundred of the season, and he remains unbeaten on his highest score so far with 156.
Warwickshire were indebted to a blitzkrieg knock of 76 from Timothy Groenewald and a more sedate, watchful fifty from Moeen Ali on the first day against Durham at Chester-le-Street. The visitors, moving along nicely at 139 for 2, lost a flurry of wickets and were stumbling precariously at 188 for 6 before Groenewald's savage innings. In the space of 46 balls, he smashed 13 fours and cleared the boundary twice, as Warwickshire were eventually dismissed for 314. Buoyed by their late spurt of runs, their bowlers then nipped out three Durham wickets who went to stumps 261 runs behind.

Bermuda completed a 2-0 series win over Canada with an 11-run win at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club, inflicting the fourth defeat in four ODI matches played by the Canadians in the last month. Although they had the consolation of a victories in the Intercontinental Cup, the results are a major blow to Canada's World Cup preparations.
Irvine Romaine's 101 was the anchor of Bermuda's impressive 272 for 7, and although Canada batted much better than in other games, there were always slightly behind the clock and in the end the stiff target was just out of reach. Romaine, a powerful striker of the ball, slammed his hundred off 111 balls, hitting five sixes and 12 fours.
The controversial decision by the Canadian selectors to omit their regular opening bowling combination of Henry Osinde and Umar Bhatti from this match surely had a bearing on the outcome. Austin Codrington did take the first three wickets that fell, but there was not the same control and power in the opening bowling as usual.

Mal Loye led the Lancashire reply with his sixth century of the season and was well supported by Stuart Law, Nathan Astle and the tail. A flurry of boundaries from Dominic Cork pushed Lancashire over 350, while Chris Peploe and Johann Louw took three wickets each.

Benham's ton consigns West Indies A to defeat

Chris Benham's riproaring century consigned West Indies A to a convincing defeat by 62 runs at the hands of Hampshire

Chris Benham's riproaring century consigned West Indies A to a convincing defeat by 62 runs at the hands of Hampshire. Benham wasted no time in making 122 from 145 balls to lift Hampshire to an unassailable 292 for 8 and ultimately heap further misery on the tourists.
He and Mike Brown put on 122 for the first wicket, a strong opening platform and the home side simply motored on from there. There was a mini-wobble after Brown fell for 44, with four wickets falling for 37, but some powerful lower-order hitting from Mitchell Stokes (36 off 18 balls) and Shaun Udal (32 not out from just 11 balls) boosted Hampshire late on.
West Indies' innings got off to a woeful start at 4 for 2 and, despite Runako Morton's 102, they couldn't recover. In fact, they were never in the hunt as they lost wickets steadily. James Bruce did the damage to the top order, grabbing 3 for 14 from seven overs, and there were three wickets too for Greg Lamb.

Test forfeited after ball tampering chaos

High drama surrounded the final Test as Pakistan refused to take the field after the interval, following the decision of the umpires to change the ball during the afternoon session

The controversial history of cricket between these two countries was given another chapter, during an extraordinary fourth day at The Oval, as the spectre of ball tampering reared its ugly head. It started with the umpires calling for a replacement ball midway through the afternoon and ended with the abandonment of the final day. What went on in between will go down in the darker side of cricket history.
The day began to unravel when the umpires called for a change of ball at the end of the 56th over, with England 230 for 3. It had started to reverse swing for Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul, but Darrell Hair spotted something he wasn't happy with and was seen pointing at the ball in conversation with Billy Doctrove. The fourth umpire, Trevor Jesty, then ran onto the field with a new box of balls which, under the Laws, the England batsmen were allowed to pick from. Play resumed until tea, but that was only the start of the drama.

In what will definitely rank as a big upset, and one which Andy Pick, the Canada coach termed was an 'embarrassment', Bermuda traipsed to a memorable six-wicket win in the opening one-dayer at Toronto

In what will definitely rank as a big upset, and one which Andy Pick, the Canada coach termed an "embarrassment", Bermuda traipsed to a memorable six-wicket win in the opening one-dayer at Toronto. Having bowled out Canada for 145, Bermuda, thanks to a solid 39 from Saleem Mukkudem, knocked off the target in just 40 overs.
"Since we arrived this morning, everything has been substandard," said Pick in his assessment, "our warm-ups, our practice and our performance." Not for the first time this season, Canada failed to put enough runs on the board, a trend hard to explain considering their good win in the four-day game, against the same opposition, earlier in the week.

4th day
Warwickshire squeezed over the line by two wickets against Hampshire as they chased down 121 in 25 overs and won off the last ball The Rose Bowl. Dimitri Mascarenhas almost pulled off an amazing win for Hampshire with five wickets as Warwickshire collapsed from 77 for 1 to 101 for 8. However, Neil Carter hit a four and a six as the visitors nicked it. Earlier, Hampshire resisted manfully as Heath Streak took six wickets. Chris Benham hit a career-best 95, adding 159 with Dominic Thornely, but the Warwickshire attack then got to work. Shaun Udal clubbed some late runs and, despite seeming just a consolation, they almost proved to be match-winning. As it is, Hampshire slip further adrift in the Championship race.
There was just the one over of play at Headingley between Yorkshire and Kent leaving the game in a dull stalemate.

A captain's innings from Charlotte Edwards and four wickets from Isa Guha helped England to a last-gasp victory with just four balls remaining against India at Arundel. England were making heavy going of chasing down 186, at a sticky 73 for 3, but Edwards rescued them with a 61-ball 47, and with Jenny Gunn (42 not out), propelled England to success.
Beth Morgan chipped in with a handy unbeaten 14 from 18 balls to ensure the win in which England managed to reverse the momentum after Jhulan Goswami and Amita Sharma had them in trouble early on.
India's own innings had got off to decent enough start, with Karu Jain and Rumeli Dhar adding 41 for the first wicket. But Dhar fell shortly after Jain, both subsiding to the medium pace of Guha, before Laura Newton accounted for the dangerous Anjum Chopra (93 for 3).
