Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif lit up a gloomy day at Lord's with two outstanding spells of pace bowling to set up Pakistan for a seven-wicket win. Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf and latterly Inzamam-ul-Haq made light of late afternoon conditions that grew darker by the moment to ease Pakistan across the line with 20 balls to spare.
If the weathermen were to have been believed there was very little chance of a full match being played, so dire was the forecast but in England such things have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Although the heady days of summer seemed a lifetime ago the rain that did arrive only reduced the contest to 40 overs-a-side. The light during Pakistan's chase would not have been fit for a Test - or even first-class match - but one-day cricket is about getting results for the crowd.

Surrey have bounced right back into Division One after riding roughshod over Glamorgan to complete a thumping 218-run victory inside three days and with it secure their return to the top flight after just one season.
Centuries from Ally Brown and Mark Butcher helped them to course into a second-innings lead of 473 before declaring on 309 for 5. Brown rattled up a quickfire 107 not out from 88 balls and Butcher was in a similar hurry to start the celebrations, blasting 108 from 139 balls, before he became one of David Harrison's three victims.
Surrey then dismissed the visitors Glamorgan for 245, with David Hemp's century going in vain. Hemp bludgeoned 155 in 177 balls but that was still far from enough to save the visitors as a triumphant Surrey attack kept up a relentless assault.

Lancashire continued to battle against Warwickshire
at Blackpool, forcing the follow-on after bowling them out for 231. All the Lancashire bowlers had performed impressively with Murali Kartik producing a probing spell of left-arm spin in his first Championship match of the season. Ian Westwood offered the major resistance with a 198-ball 67 but the pressure created by the bowlers was too much for the rest. Earlier, Lancashire declared on 456 for 9, after Naqaash Tahir had bagged 7 for 107. For the second time in the match play was halted when a water bomb landed on the pitch and Mal Loye, the Lancashire batsman, even climbed a wall to try and find the culprit. It had earlier happened on the first day.
Middlesex totally unraveled at the hands of Yorkshire's spinners at Scarborough, leaving Yorkshire with a target of 274. In heartening sight, two young legspinners took all 10 wickets. Mark Lawson took 6 for 88 and Adil Rashid, on the ground where he burst onto the scene a few weeks ago against Warwickshire, had 4 for 96 as the visitors fell away for 224. The bulk of those runs came from Ben Hutton, who stuck 105 from 166 balls, with ten fours and two sixes. Yorkshire had started grafting their way towards a win, and were 39 without loss by stumps.

Two Tests, two fights to the death: women's cricket doesn't get any more exciting. Last time out it was India battling to save the draw, this time they were battling to win - and they fell over the line just in the nick of time to take the match, and with it the series.
Jhulan Goswami took her second five-wicket haul of the match, to end with very tidy match-figures of 10 for 78, and leave India just 98 for the series victory. They got there with five wickets to spare, Karu Jain (34) and Mithali Raj (22*) leading the charge.
By lunch at Taunton, England were firmly on the rack, with six down and a lead of just 54. India were already scenting victory to avenge their whitewash in the one-dayers. After their valiant efforts to stave off defeat yesterday, Charlotte Edwards and Caroline Atkins both fell early, their mammoth third-wicket stand of 178 coming to a head when Edwards was dismissed by Goswami.

Walker sinks flat Somerset

Leicestershire lifted themselves out of the bottom two with an uninspiring 36-run win over Somerset at Grace Road in a Division Two basement battle

Leicestershire lifted themselves out of the bottom two with an uninspiring 36-run win over Somerset at Grace Road in a Division Two basement battle.
Leicestershire batted first and made heavy weather on a slow pitch. Darren Maddy and HD Ackerman put on 69 for the second wicket, but the middle order was unable to inject any impetus and the innings rather fizzled out.
Somerset's pursuit of a modest target of 174 was scuppered by Nick Walker who removed four of the top six to leave them 58 for 6. And he could have had a fifth, but he was denied by a dropped catch just at the end of his spell. Youngsters Sam Spurway and Gareth Andrew added 59 for the eighth wicket to give them a flicker of hope before Jeremy Snape polished off the tail.

Just 37 overs were possible in Lancashire's crucial clash against Warwickshire at Blackpool, during which time the home side moved on to 429 for 6. Halfway through this match, and with not one innings yet completed, a draw is looking likely. Iain Sutcliffe converted his century to 159 before falling to Imran Tahir, one of four victims for the bowler. Lee Daggett bagged the other wicket, claiming Glen Chapple just after Lancashire had passed the 400-mark.

Edwards century keeps England hopes alive

Captain's innings don't come much more important. Charlotte Edwards' third Test century after England followed on earlier today has kept their slim hopes of saving this Test alive

Captain's innings don't come much more important. Charlotte Edwards' third Test century after England followed on earlier today has kept their slim hopes of saving this Test alive. The home side were really in dire straits as their collapse at the hands of India continued at Taunton, with Jhulan Goswami claiming 5 for 33 from 13 hostile overs.
Dismissed for 99, they were in more trouble at 34 for 2 in their second innings after losing both Laura Newton (3) and Claire Taylor (12) cheaply. Goswami accounted for Newton for the second time this match, bowling her once more and when Taylor was run out England were staring right down the barrel, still 173 runs adrift of India's first-innings total.
But Edwards came together with Caroline Atkins and they lifted England to 204 by the close, in a third-wicket partnership that is so far worth 170. Atkins battled valiantly for her 68 runs which have come from 282 balls and Edwards reached her century in the last over of the day, to a rousing reception from the crowd who know just how important this innings is on a seesawing day.

Goswami and Sharma rip through England

England are taking some time to settle into their new home and by the close on the second day, plenty of their batsmen had been evicted, leaving their first innings in tatters

England are taking some time to settle into their new home and by the close on the second day, plenty of their batsmen had been evicted, leaving their first innings in tatters. India played the bailiffs, in particular the menacing Amita Sharma and Jhulan Goswami, who have been causing trouble all summer and were similarly devastating today.
Goswami tore through the top order, ripping out the top trio to leave England quaking at 22 for 3, in reply to India's first-innings total of 307. Sharma provided no respite from the other end, either, as the pace pairing worked in tandem to pick off England's batsmen. She removed the new batting sensation Sarah Taylor for 12, trapping her lbw, and then dismissed Beth Morgan for a duck, edging through to Karu Jain.
By this stage England were in serious trouble, at 40 for 5 and things were only to get worse for them, with Rumeli Dhar removing Jenny Gunn for 18. Now England were feeling sorry for themselves, at 46 for 6, but Charlotte Edwards - who had dropped down the order because she wasn't feeling well - and Jane Smit managed to cling on to the close, to push England to 74 for 6. They've a long way to go yet before they avoid the follow-on.

Iain Sucliffe's second century of the season handed Lancashire a solid base in their crucial clash against Warwickshire
at Blackpool. Sutcliffe added 108 for the third wicket with Stuart Law after Warwickshire struck twice before lunch. Law stroked 12 boundaries in his 97-ball 61 and Sutcliffe reached his ton off 101 balls. However, Lancashire progress was halted when rain washed out the final session and there was a poor forecast for tomorrow. Moments before tea, a water bomb and held up proceedings for a few moments after landing on a length.
Paul Weekes, who has on the verge of leaving Middlesex midway through the summer, hit his first century of the season as they recovered from a difficult position against Yorkshire at Scarborough. Weekes arrived with Middlesex 115 for 4 after Deon Kruis had taken the first four wickets and turned the innings around. He lost Scott Styris for 64 - the first success for Matthew Hoggard - but formed important stands with David Nash and Chad Keegan. Kruis picked up five, but Hoggard was restricted to two scalps on his return to county action.
